very good single player games

To name a few:

Dishonored.
Metro 2033 - Especially this.
Jedi Knight Series.
Half-Life Series.
Medal of Honor: AA & expansions, Airborne.
Call of Duty series.
Bioshock 1 and 2.

Crysis - probably the best FPS single player experience you'll have besides Metro 2033. You're basically a super soldier in a super suit which has 4 'modes'.

Super strength - Can jump large heights, throw objects and people huge distances, eliminates most of the recoil while firing and gives your punches the power to move vehicles/knock down trees.

Super Speed - Greatly increases your movement speed, standard movement speed is around the same speed as your regular sprint speed, applies in all stances (running, sneaking, prone). Makes you slightly less durable.

Maximum Armor - Turns you into a tank, you can absorb several times as many bullets as normal, you can drop from large heights without taking damage but your movement speed is incredibly slow.

Cloak - Constantly drains battery, wears off when your battery is depleted or when a shot is fired, have to be smart & strategic.

You also have the ability to modify your weapons on the fly, attaching and removing flashlights, silencers, red dot sights and tactical under barrel attachments (shotguns, grenade launchers, tranquilizers etc).

The game is still among the best for looks and has a stunning world you can roam around in. The A.I. is very flaky as one second they can be acting like a pack of morons, no more a threat to you than a tropical chicken, the next they'll be pin you under gunfire while their mates flank you, so the difficulty can seem to fluctuate artificially from time to time. Otherwise that really is about the only downside, otherwise it's an incredibly fun shooter, and can feel very strategic later on. Very underrated IMO as the gameplay is regularly overlooked for the visuals and a lot of people wrongly label it a glorified tech demo, there is a serious, fun and engaging single player campaign to experience.

great list thanks

It's a good game, as is Crysis Warhead.

Another vote for Portal 2 btw. It's a puzzle-solving game (if you aren't familiar with it for some weird reason), but that really doesn't do it justice. Great atmosphere, quirky characters, solid story, consistent and bug-free gameplay. Looks good too.

If you're after some strategy to pause from the action give Civilization V a go :) Found a Civ and take it from pre-history right up to the near future!

Also the Total War series of games are completely engrossing! Nice balance of large scale management (similar to Civ) with some fantastically detailed RTS on the battlefield!
The bonus to this too is you can pick the game corresponding to your interests.
I'm a bit of a history buff personally so I have them all :P

Another large scale strategy game to concider is Crusader Kings 2. Diplomacy and intrigue (with some war mixed in). This is the game I'm most addicted to atm.

Have a look at those :D

have played it before was very .....frustrating

fm2013 or skyrim would get my vote.

or switch to your browser enable in private browsing and play a whole different kind of single player game :)

Perhaps Trine/Trine 2 as recommended above? Still a bit puzzle-y, but nowhere near as frustrating as Portal and there's some fun combat/funny characters to keep it light. Trine 2 is absolutely beautiful btw. I nearly bought a 3D monitor just for that game.

Black Mesa Source - It's a remake of the original Half Life with updated graphics. It's very well done and it's free.

btw, multiplier gaming doesn't eat that much bandwidth. Do some googling on it, I bet your surprised.

sounds good will check it out

If you enjoy Crysis, check out Metro 2033 as well, both are graphical powerhouses and very immersive. Crysis Warhead and Crysis 2 are definite recommendations afterwards too, and if you enjoy Metro 2033, Metro Last Light is coming out very soon, as is Crysis 3. :)
