Very high CPU temperature on new build

Hi there,

I am getting very high CPU temperature readings in BIOS on a new build (which is my first attempt at one, please find specs below) - it starts at around 50 then goes up to 84.

After checking the thermal compound on the CPU, which I applied with the pea method, it seemed that it hadn't spread well at all, so I cleaned it off with isopropyl and applied again, this time spreading thinly across the CPU with a credit card (this covered about 90-95% of the CPU as unfortunately I ran out of compound).

When rebooting the temperature problems persist - perhaps I am still not applying the compound correctly or perhaps there is another culprit? If anyone has any ideas what might be causing this I would greatly appreciate to hear.

How tight are you fastening the cooler down? When I installed my alphenhorn pure on my first build I had very high temps as I fastend it down way to tight

Until the screws stop and not tightening beyond that (with a screwdriver)

Well BA, their def seems to be some kind of seating problem. When I had the D14 on my old 2700K system the thermal compound spread out pretty well (I use the rice grain/pea method too).

From memory mine usually spread out to at least 1p sized.

You tightening them in the same way you put a wheel on a car? Tighten top right then bottom left then top left bottom right doing them a little bit at a time.

It certainly seems like a seating issue like mentioned above, doing it the way I explained should result in a even spread of compound

After taking a better look inside the case I noticed the heatsink wasn't touching the CPU. I managed to reseat it correctly which solved the problem.
