Very high ping every time something is uploading, normal?

So I've had this issue since I moved broadband to Sky where my ping goes from 5-20ms to 200-600ms usually around 400ms every time something is uploading on the network.

The download speeds also drop from around 8mb to 3mb and the upload drops too.

Now I know there is meant to be an effect on the network but is this normal? I don't remember it ever being like this before

I've tried 3 different routers including the sky one and also tried to set up QOS to limit the upload speed to 600kbps (from 1.2mb)

QOS doesn't seem to work on my netgear DGND3700v2, I've set it as below

xEaf0hSrd9XogGxsij4-0vCOMhDvbLdpAmm1wjGdtUcl3zuhK9w9POLRMtm9_HfjJVNWJqCafCs6T-TExE2A9oUy1rx3QU2snIcaChn9QAsJQyljOa1wXOz4xEQimfuv3Sg3e4WaMV6IW0o1X9l55tRfzf1k4jIKNFxK3RoMg9jahRYzQXhZ6SwrWMkyNMlsasC0d-6WssW_hRmpdmTl6dh7O2d4MSHyCFo_lj6HAcep09OUFvhMbi-4sRkoeeGBVWTu0H5kXAjUUqrqA4JxBdJP0q9vx0sAaescN79YsK3KxlDOIqcdGHFwEdEb4oW-8qaeULF884ZmvvhyjIQsHRSEFt0bbBeTk6Sr4zkXde8FLciRMSFq2PaVLXErO1PkSZjYTpSxGczBjss7_5a_bgin0jdneaq5-dRrvot0w_0hxW4LpHOEx6591OWXX9hbX9ti1HmoIjPmKFsTcdl5alJ08Lz1WtK7JSxnhOuNxN5GEpLX9jONrdgOU3QuUpXPgJO7iVP4_D889GnFMz5L0Ey_zNGy76Mo1Fzk4LsOTeR67gQ7LFzRug7-EDRKgECwbxOrlQ=w3362-h508-no

but it doesn't limit my upload speed for some reason and it still maxes out at around 1mb

Any ideas? Rang up sky they say their end is all fine.

I presume you are on ADSL?

Yes it is normal.
No QoS will not fix it. (You can help limit it with a decent QoS config but without ISP side support you are going to struggle)

What is probably happening. The Acknowledgement packets of the download are being delayed due to saturated upload stream.

Draytek have had a fix on their routers / modems for some time, it's ACK priority. I have tested this and it works, it's extremely useful if your hosting a web-server from home as if the upload bandwidth becomes saturated everything else remains running smooth.

Look for 'Outbound TCP ACK Prioritize' about 25% of the way down the page on next link.

Thanks for the replies

So why wasn't it happening before when I was on BT?

Yes unfortunately I can't get cable or fibre in my street so on ADSL and have been for around 7 years. I've never had this issue until I moved to sky recently

Can they do something on the ISP side to sort it out? Was meant to call them today but didn't get a chance

Don't mind buying a Draytek router if it will sort this as it's well annoying. Were you getting normal ping times when you used their fix Jason?

Cheers

I don't think your QoS is actually configured, based on that screenshot. You've told it how quick your upload is but not turned QoS on for your Internet connection. I don't think that 600Kbps figure is an upload limit, it's just telling the router how quick your upload is so that it can use it as a reference point. At least that's how I read it.

Have you read the Netgear FAQs/help?

Different router?

You could use http://www.netlimiter.com/ to cap the speed.

The other two routers I tried are ones I've used previously. Cheers will check out the netlimiter

Ah OK, not read the FAQ but will do thank you. The option to "turn bandwidth control on" is ticked so I thought that's all I had to do. I've just ticked the turn internet access QOS on too now
