To a dear JoeyJoJo after a slight slowdown over christmas and a hard fought scrap over the cell I've finally overtaken you :o

Also been looking through my list of clients and I a project 1498 worth 805points! I though you couldn't get higher than a 600pointer?

Yes I'm trying to reduce our electricity consumption. Thus, pcs *** when not in use.

Thanks for the race though :)

Edit: Lol thanks :D

Feriso my good man. I wouldn't want to do anything prematurely, but EOC estimates that I will restomp in 3.7 weeks :)

Parp parp! :D

I suggest you pay some attention to what's coming up behind you and get folding, young man. ;)

Parp, parp!
Indeed. The inevitable parp. Held you off longer than expected though :)

Thanks, all the best with the folding :) What machines have you got then?

I had actually noticed - trying to get more cores crunching atm so hopefullt I'll reverse that trend. :)

I thought you were slowing down to save on the leccy?

I was going to say that. 1472 ppd (according to your sig at the moment) is hardly slouching.

The borgs are 20 identical Dell Optiplexes which have Pentium D 820s inside. I'm only running the Windows console client on one core as I wanted to make absolutely sure it would have no impact on the use of the PCs and I decided against borging the laptops. I should be installing a nice new server there in a couple of weeks and it'll be interesting to see how well that runs FaH. Here, I built up to six Windows console clients on three PCs but this dropped to two PCs when we moved a few weeks ago and I'm not running any at the moment. Currently I'm just running the SMP client on one PC (E6300, Ubuntu under VMware) but I might start a second PC over the weekend.

I'm having a crunching week as I've got the house to myself :D It might hover between 1000 and 1400 after tomorrow though :(

Snappy - nice neat farm you've got there. No wonder you've been racing after me :) Get two clients on though, would double!

How much does running a PC 24/7 cost?

Does running a CPU at 100% count as "high load" in a power consumption sense?

Cheers.

What PC? and is it on anyway or just a dedicated folder with the screen off?

using a P4 at 100% instead of just general admin stuff (web/word/e-mail) uses ~ 1p extra an hour [~75w] this is above normal costs ~ 4.5p/h inc crt screen [~300w]
Plus 1p per Ghz oc if any

C2D and AMD's all run at lower watts so use 2/3 of the above figs.
Higher efficency PSU can take an additional 10% off wattage at plug/cost

These are rough guide figs hope they help - if you tell me your cpu (and Oc if any) I'll do the calc .

Well for how much a pc costs you can measure or calculate it's power consumption. There are psu calculators which will give you an estimate. Don't forget as well that overclocking and running at 100% make a large difference. My 165 for example is 110W at idle (110 joules per second) but around 239 when overclocked (according to this)

(Wow I'm slow...) As SS says, the psu will take 10-15% immediately.

What's the cost for a kw/h atm? Cba to find a statement.

Also, almost all of the power will go to heat, so at this time of year I have no problem with leaving them on all the time. In the Summer that might change :p

That's a really good link - thanks JJJ, it confirms my figs too (which is nice)

100% folding rig have the following power requirements here. This is a whole rig inc screen - taken at plug. all PC's measured at stock.

I've used 15p per Kw/h which is just below average but saying that British Gas have just cut there's to 12p and many others will probably follow.
