Very short cat6 patch cables

Hi All,

Silly question, we're about to put a second 48 port gigabit switch in at my office which supports link aggregation. As we do a lot of large file transfers and high speed transfers (lots of big graphics and video workstation with very fast raid arrays connecting to high performance file servers) I'm intending to put in between 4 and 8 linked ports between the two switches to maximise inter switch performance.

I've had a quick look for short cat6 patch cables but can only really find 0.5m ones as the shortest. Seeing as the second switch is going to be literally right about the first switch in the rack it only really needs cables of about 15 cms or so and it would be much neater for them to be that short.

I'd rather not make them up myself as I'd feel happier with a premade high quality cable for this.

Any thoughts?

Why didn't you just get stackable switches?

You can probably find short patches on eBay, but these will probably just be made by some guy, just easier to make it yourself - Make 10 then use the last 6 or so. (So you can get some good practice in)

Usual problem, we're a relatively small company and didn't ever expect to fully propogate the 48 ports we had. But with pretty much everything being on the network these days its suprising how quickly they get filled.

I'll get out my crimp tool and start practicing methink.

You can get .3 and .5m cat6 patch cables for about a quid.

Not worth your time to make them youself.

Doesnt the cat5/6 spec have a minimum cable length to prevent standing wave echo? In practice, you will probably find this to be a non-issue.

What? for the effort of ordering some in I would have just made them, in the time it takes to write this post you could probably make 2 or 3.

If I was connecting 100 desktops to wall sockets then obviously youd order them in, but for under 10, and if you have the heads and cable lying around you might as well get crimping.
