Testing my new Seagate 7200.11 500GB/32Mb... Firmware upgraded to AD14...

Why's my Burst Rate so slow compared to others? Is it because i'm benching it in Windows XP on my ASUS A8N-SLi Deluxe motherboard?

My old 200Gb Maxtor SATA-1 has a Burst Rate of 120+Mb/s... This is only 88Mb/s... Whats going on... :(

Other readings seem to be on par with other users... Any help appreciated... :)

I've recently installed a 1TB Seagate 7200.11 jobbie and the transfer rate on that is awfully poor at just 125mb/sec. This is from HDTach btw. It's not flashed or anything yet and I've confirmed it to be a good one with the full 32mb of cache.

My 1TB Seagate pulls in way higher transfer rates compared to it. I'll look into this properly tomorrow though as it's late.

Thanks for the reply m8, could do with this getting resolved, as other ppl in the HD Benchmarking thread with the same HD as me are getting Burst Rates of 180-190Mb/sec... So i am WELL off that score... :(

Apologies mate, I got my facts wrong last night it seems. Guess I was more tired then it seemed. The post above should refer to a 1TB Hitachi drive, and not the 1TB Seagate, which I also have.

I just did some tests on HD Tune, and still don't know why my Hitachi performs like that. The Seagate/Hitachi pull in the following:

Seagate:
Transfer Rate:
Min: 51.0mb/sec
Max: 98.6mb/sec
Av: 82.9mb/sec

Access Time: 12.3
Burst Rate: 174.6mb/sec

Hitachi
Transfer Rate:
Min: 43.1mb/sec
Max: 82.9mb/sec
Av: 69.9mb/sec

Access Time: 12.6
Burst Rate: 95.9mb/sec

Seems like we have a similar issue, but with different makes of hard disk lol. Both mine are running in UDMA5 mode too.

Does the drive still have the SATA150 limit jumper on?

I wouldn't worry a huge amount though, any improvement in the burst speed isn't going to be hugely noticeable and it's not as if the sustained transfer rate's slow or anything - averaging 85MB/s is not to be sniffed at!

Yes, i have removed the jumper from the drive, and is detected in XP as SATA-II... Just bugs me when others with the same drive are getting twice the burst rate as me... :(

I'd take a look at HDTach tbh - I've not found HDTune to be the most accurate of late - my 4x 7200.10 RAID0 in it is showing exactly the same speeds as if it was just one of those discs - whereas everything else shows it being atleast 3x faster than a single disc.
