Hi all

I`m visiting my father this week, his PC has a strange problem in the last two days that I can not manage to resolve.

PC is Win 7 64bit.
2500k 4.5
P8P67 Deluxe, BIOS 3602
16GB DDR3
GTX 1080

When opening chrome, the home page (youtube) takes about 40 seconds to load. The page is white and at the bottom left the status either "connecting..." or "establishing secure connection" for about 35 seconds, then the page loads. If you select another website, it takes another 40 seconds to load that page, but if you select youtube again, it loads youtube instantly. So only new pages take a long time. Closing the browser and opening again causes the same delays.
Once you are on any page, it works perfect, youtube videos have no buffering, swapping between pages within the website has no delays.
Kaspersky database wont update as it is stuck on "opening connection", in game purchases usually dont work, Steam often wont connect.
I tried IE but it has the same problem.
I ran speed test, download is 10Mb which is good for this area, ping is 50ms.
So the problem appears to be only on the initial connection to pages, and with other apps trying to connect.
The model it a Netgear84 ADSL/wireless router all in one, PC has ethernet cable to wireless router.
All wireless devices work perfectly (phones and tablets), no delay at all, so this is only a problem with the PC. I don`t have a wireless dongle to try to test the PC with wireless.
I changed his GFX card from a 1060 to a 1080 a few days before the problem started, I did have the motherboard out to clean up the dust and some cabling, but had no issues with putting it all back together.
I did update his BIOS from a very old version to the most recent (P8P67). After the GFX card and BIOS update, I am pretty sure everything worked fine, but I can`t say for certain, but I don`t know of any BIOS settings that could cause this.

What I have tried so far with no success....
Ran CC cleaner (scan and reg cleanup)
Ran Kaskersky full scan
Tried IE
Disabled AV software
Disabled overclock (2500k at 4.5)
Removed phone from ADSL filter.
Ran Chrome incognito mode
Swapped the cable location to other ethernet port on PC and router.
Checked for any programs using up system resources.

So, anybody any ideas why opening new pages take for ever, but once in the page it works perfectly?

Thanks for an advice.

Just tried it with settings 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, no change though.

I do notice in the Network connections page, the active connection is Local area connection 2 Realtek PCI, there are 2 other connections with red crosses (unplugged(, local area connection, Intel Gigabit Network and Kaspersky security data escort. I`m not so good at network problems so trying to point out anything that might be wrong here!

Not
tried safe mode, will do it first thing in the morning.

What do you mean by another device?

I ordered a WiFi dongle, can test it Saturday, you never know! Trying to fix this before I leave on Sunday.

Tried safe mode, no change.
Transparent proxies, sorry, no idea what that means.
Also not sure how to access a website by it`s IP alone.

Here is a pic of the F12 on first access to youtube after a fresh boot. It took about 20 seconds to load the page, half the time from yesterday.

After some testing using F12, I see that the F12 page is blank during the long load, Chrome status is connecting or establishing secure connection. Once the page loads, the info you see on F12 page pops up. If I then switch between pages the load instantly, it`s the same info that appears in F12, it`s not as if there are less errors on pages that appear instantly. So I don`t think the F12 helps so much in this case?

Only other info I have is that all wifi devices work apart from an old Ipad. My windows phone, wifes iPhone, or newish ipad work perfect, my mums ancient ipad 2 that worked fine, but was always slow, will not access many pages.

I have disabled / paused the protection, didn`t help, although I am tempted to uninstall it to see. KS seems to get top reviews but it does seem such a large and over complicated program, maybe uninstall and try something more basic or free.

will try another cable, will have another router and a WiFi dongle on Saturday to test.

put bitdefender on, but can't update it as it wont connect.

WIFI devices work fine if that`s what you mean.

Thanks for the F12 tip, it`s not a page I have used before. I checked it, and you can clearly see the time it takes to connect to the page, once the 1st info appears on the page, it`s only a few ms to load completely. The problem isn`t a slow loading of data on the page, it`s 32 seconds on a white screen while it connects to the page, the actual download speed once connected is fine.

Got the Laptop, but it`s so slow doing anything (takes 30 secs for the F12 page to show) that it`s hard to come to a conclusion.

One thing I see on F12 page is even though the Laptop appears to take the same time to load stuff, most of this time is from the clicking the browser icon to the window opening. Looking at F12, the very first line where my PC shows 32 seconds, the Laptop shows 450ms, suggesting that the PC hardware is the problem.

I would try Linux, but I would have a better chance understanding Japanese to be honest!

Tomorrow will try a WIFI dongle and a new Router when it arrives from Amazon.

Got a WIFI dongle this morning, tested it but shows exactly the same problem, 30 sec connect time. Browsing is not a problem as there is only this long delay the first time you access a page, the problem is I can`t update any antivirus database in Kaspersky, although Avast free seems to be working so far, can`t update itunes to backup an ipad, cant get DLC for games as that times out, steam often won`t load etc.

I need to know if another good Laptop or PC works, so will ask another neighbour if he can bring his PC round to see how that goes.

If anybody has any other ideas let me know.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Hi all.

Managed to make a bit of progress today but it`s my last day visiting so a bit limited for time. Here is what happened.

WIFI dongle no change.
Got a good Laptop from a friend, tried WIFI and cable, Chrome, massive delay like my Dads PC, Edge worked perfectly.
Took my Dads PC to friends house, everything worked perfectly.
So this now points towards the router or the incoming signal.
Installed Intel LAN and Realtek drivers again.
I reset the router to factory default, ran the routerlogin.net programme to connect etc, took many attempts, the menu system in the Netgear genie kept resetting, like it kept loosing the internet signal and resetting the procedure.
Managed to get logged in and the router connected again, same problem with chrome, but now IE11 seems to be working, but ever few times I opened IE11, it wouldn`t even attempt to access the home page, just sat doing nothing.
Uninstallled chrome and installed again, still no good, unistalled, now using IE11.
So far IE11 seems fairly stable, using it with the WIFI dongle as have a feeling it`s more stable. But out of time to do more trouble shooting. It works enough for my Dad to watch his youtube stuff and buy stuff online etc.
When I am back in early Nov, I will bring my ITX build in my hand luggage and do some more testing, will also try a new router.
There house is old, there are phones all over the house, they crackle, sometimes work, and have buzzing noises, didn't know that until now. Filters are all in place but I think it may have something to do with it. I cant access the master phone box as its in the attic somewhere and cant find it.

Still the strange this is, IE11 seems to work normal now, speed test shows 50ms ping, 11mb DL (for middle of nowhere in Scotland is good), but I can`t get access to iTunes store, or DLC in games.
Don`t have any restore points as option disabled. Tempted to put BIOS back to version it was before I came but can`t thing why that would have messed it up.

Not spoke to ISP, will leave it as is, it`s works enough. New router when I am back in Nov and try with my ITX PC and go from there.

Search before for the main line in, but it`s hard to find, might try again in Nov.

Tempted to build him a ITX PC for gaming, just not sure the smallest case his GTX1080 will fit into, but would be a bummer to build something like that and have the same issue!

They had issues with the line a while back, nightmare with BT trying to solve it, the put a new master box in the attic but I couldn't find it and nearly chocked to death when disturbing the insulation!

New chrome install didn't change anything, IE11 is also very slow now, I took the PC to a family friend 2 doors away, he has a nice new Ryzen build, tested it there, perfect, no problems at all, so it's not the PC.

I'm back early Nov visiting him, will try a new router and will ask BT to test the line again and see what advice they have. PC is working well enough for his main uses for now, greatly appreciate all the help.
