Just swapped out my E6300 for a mates E6600 and in coretemp, the CPU temp is at idle 35c however the 2 core temps are at 50c!! I am running on a freezer 7 which is fitted correctly, whats wrong with these temps??

Taken from coretemp website:

The temperature readings are very accurate as the data is collected from a Digital Thermal Sensor (or DTS) which is located in each individual processing core, near the hottest part. This sensor is digital, which means it doesn't rely on an external circuit located on the motherboard to report temperature, its value is stored in a special register in the processor so any software can access and read it.

The other CPU temperature is taken by the motherboard from a thermal diode on the cpu near the cpu heatspreader. So coretemp is correct and the cores are 50c. Are you using the latest version of coretemp?

yes was the latest version of core temp aswell?! i was looking forward to overclocking this thing and im barely looking good at stock, mabye its normal for the cores to be this high, my cpu temp is only 35c!

At the moment my E6400 is idling at:

CPU = 26c
Core 1 = 31c
Core 2 = 32c

and that's overclocked to 3.2Ghz

What's the airflow like in your case, what volts is the E6600 on and is the fan on the freezer 7 at full?

They're the same then? The only other things I can think of is to try updating the motherboard BIOS and to check that C1E and EIST are enabled in the BIOS.

If that doesn't change anything you will just have to assume the core temperatures are wrong when using that motherboard. Could you try the cpu in your mates computer again just to double check?

I have an e6600 overclocked to 3.4ghz and it idles in the high forties. If yours is 50c at the stock speed of 2.4ghz you deffo need better airflow. Dont forget it's been exceptionally hot just recently so you wont be getting the temps your mate got before the weather warmed up.

a very good point, my temps are fine i think as my room is always hot, im looking at the swiftech compact kits as i really wanted to hit 3ghz! cheers for the help all!

Aren't the c2d's rated for up to 85 degrees? As long as you don't get too close to 80 I wouldn't care.

This hot weather is a real killer at the moment though which ever way you look at it.
