Very weird problem

Basically I have just got the 6870, the problem that is occuring is that sometimes it does not detect my graphics card when booting and defaults to onboard graphics.
I am currently using a asusp5n73am, this is a nforce chip some have had problems with this before, and am wondering is it the graphics card or the motherboard?

Does anyone know some bios settings that might fix this? or is it a permanent problem?
 
Is the monitor plugged into the 6870 or the onboard at bootup?
(should be in the 6870)

Onboard graphics should be disable if card is inserted into motherboard
 
Well I have plugged it into the 6870 at boot, and the fan just went at 100% so then I plugged it into onboard to change bios etc.

I cannot actually disable the onboard graphics,the only thing I can do is set priorities, and I have just managed to boot. I have to go and boot into windows 7 using onboard, then shutdown and boot again for it to work.

I had a board that had onboard gfx but I used a deicated card. If you go into the bios there should an option where you can boot with the vga, deicated or if there isn't a deicated gfx detected it will boot with onboard.

This is an image from my g31m-es2l bios. I am referring to the 'onboard vga' option when I seek above.

I know, I put it as pci e but when I cold boot it goes to onboard sometimes?
Really weird problem however this morning it did not happen and I just left it on,I really did not want to spend my whole day struggling to boot to my graphics card, just because I decided to turn it off.
 
In BIOS change INIT FIRST DISPLAY to PCIE...

The most likely problem would probably be the GFX connection to the board...make sure its properly inserted into the PCI-E slot, and make sure you have the PCI-E power interface plugged into the card where needed...probably needs 2 6pin connectors to it...not sure about this particular card though.
 
Yes the bios is set to pcie, I have the power cables inserted all fine and I have been using it fine for a couple of days however 1/2 times it will boot to onboard graphics instead of pci e, very strange..
 
Does your board have a 2nd PCI-E slot? perhaps try it in that and see if it works any better?

Also try completely unplugging the new gfx card from the system and re-inserting it again, just to make sure you have everything connected correctly.
 
Have you tried updating your bios? Some research when my 5850 didnt work with my Nvidia chipset motherboard suggested that the old Nvidia chipsets struggle a little with the new ATI cards, some sort of communication problem, and it was somehow related to cold boots. Some of them got bios updates to fix it, although I don't believe mine ever did. I think that the board you had did though.
 
As it's intermittent, I'd suspect a dodgy connection. Pull the card out, give the slot a good blow out, wipe the card contacts, and reinsert firmly. Update mobo bios too.
