The D-Sub port that provides analogue VGA connectivity on PCs might have been around for a very long time, but it looks like its days are numbered at last: AMD, Dell, Intel, Lenovo, LG Display, and Samsung have issued a joint statement pledging to ditch the port in favour of newer, digital outputs.

It's about time legacy parts are phased out, should help reduce costs

Hurrah, I guess people with older monitors can always use the adaptors if they need to. :) Considering how long ago they were phased out on most graphics cards it's about time they did it for motherboards.

been using DVI since getting a Mac 3 years ago, dont touch anything else now every graphics card i've bought came with 2 dvi slots on them, never a VGA, so it cant be a bad thing :)

Not fussed about seeing it go. Indeed, I was looking at my backplate of my mini-itx motherboard recently and noticed how much space the VGA and DVI connectors take up. They do seem rather archaic.

In some ways VGA is technically superior to DVI, It can handle higher resolutions at higher frequency (greater framerate). Although distortion can start to get appartent at the high end. With a good quality vga cable and connections the difference is indistinguishable. - That said most monitors that now have vga, use a cheap controller which isnt on par to performance models of past.

DVI's days are certainly numberd. As people wish for higher res at higher frame rates, which dvi cant do. Nor can the current display port.. I understand new revisions of display port are planned which shall provide the ability todo both.

As far as connections go. VGA is immense in the computer world.. few standards/connections have managed to perform / hold there own through the decades.

I guess it is time to start putting it to rest as things improve, however as of now, the current dvi/display port cant offer more, so I think its too soon to completely put it to bed.

Good, hope that damned scart connection goes to the electronic dustbin with it!

Not sure why VGA wasn't phased out ages ago anyway - with at least one DVI-I socket, a DVI to VGA adapter will be fine for those still needing VGA connections. Something like 1 x DVI-I plus 2 x HDMI makes the most sense really on a modern graphics card.

Dual link DVI is apparently limited by the copper connection used so probably won't be surpassed by anything other than a future optical connection.

There's a fair amount of legacy stuff that could be retired for instance ps2 connectors, ide, floppy drives and serial ports to name a few.

cant have full n-key rollover keyboards without ps2...

and I don't know the last time I saw a computer that came with a floppy drive :P
