VGA Vs HDMI

It really depends on the games. If you try to run less intensive/older games like Battlefield 2 or KOTOR on a 9500GT @1920x1080 I think you will be fine. However, playing newer games (Far Cry 2, Call of Duty 4, Crysis) will not be a very nice experience ie less than 25FPS.

is there any app that will be able to tell me recommended settings for games, as i find very few seem to have this feature built in so spend ages changing settings to try to get it to look as good as pos but without the lag.

No idea, I usually just turn on Fraps (to see my framerate) and then turn up the settings until it dips below 40FPS. Shouldn't take too long, but with your card I suggest keeping anti-aliasing off (at your resolution and with your low-power card it will kill framerates).

ok kool, will try fraps and see how i get on. what sort of FPS should i be looking at for my card?

This is usually varies from person-to-person, but I usually try to aim for 40FPS+ (60 if at all possible) in fast moving games, however this probably isn't realistic considering your card and resolution. With this in mind I would suggest aiming for 30FPS and seeing how it looks to you, also try turning on "motion blur" if you get the option and see how you find it.

What kind of games are you hoping to play?

like racing and football. tried a few fps but as of yet do not have a table to put the keyboard and mouse on so unless i can use a gamepad i find it hard to play :( got L4D2 and that was pretty awesome

Cool, i'm sure the racing and football games will work fine -as long as you tune the settings you should be able to maintain 30+ FPS. As for L4D2, turn of AA (anti-aliasing) and you will be flying.

As for other FPS games, I strongly suggest going to Ikea and getting a table - they are awesome :) (as are RPGs eg. fallout 3 and Dragon Age). I find plying with mouse in keyboard so much better than a gamepad as you have much more precise control and far more keys/buttons at your disposal.

yeah got fallout 3 for xbox360 and loved it, not really got the hang of KB/M as i have always been a console person, but there seems to be sooo much more potential with pc gaming from what i have been reading so thought it might be time to start looking into it more.

right, its now got loads more options, the highest i can go to is 1080p, 1768x992, it says 1080p, 1920x1080 (native) as one of the options, but its too big for the screen and i cant seem to adjust it to make it fit :( also there is an option to have HDMI (audio enabled) but i still get no sound, is there any way of getting sound as the surround sound is running through the tv, or am i going to have to get a splitter and plug the pc into the speakers seperatly?

Hi m8, Might be able to help a bit.

For the audio you need to connect the motherboards internal S/PDIF connector to the graphics card, you will need the cable (one may have come with the motherboard or graphics card). With this connected the sound via HDMI should work.

As for getting the screen to being the right size - do this:

Go into Nvidia control panel (right click on the desktop and select it)
Display>Adjust Desktop Size and position > resize desktop
Then use the sliders to line up the picture with your actual screen
Save the settings
Win

ok will try this.

the up/down slider is the only one on the screen so i cant adjust anything else :(

If you can only see one slider - I have a keyboard workaround for you:

Go into the "resize desktop" window. Press Tab *Twice* then use the left and right arrow keys to change the picture width. Press tab again to select the vertical slider. Hoperfully that will allow you to adjust the desktop so that the arrows are right in the corner of your screen.

Also, are you not able to change the vertical bar so that the horizontal one comes onto the screen?

As for the cable, this is what it looks like:

If you didn't get one with your graphics card or motherboard, you will have to buy one. I wouldn't imagine your work would have one, but for buying one - they don't cost that much.

that dont solve it either :( just see the top right arrow and in moves the whole screen to the bottom right corner, highest i can get so everything fits on the screen is 1800x1014. not to worry maybe the new gfx card will resolve this.

i work in a pc shop so im sure there will be one somewhere.

Manhunt 2, NFS:Shift and SAW get FPS of around 30 on high settings (1024x768).

having trouble hunting down the S/PDIF cable :(

with the res being 1800x1014 im guessing its not very well proportioned, am i better going back to the 1768x992 res?

ok these pics aint great because the room has no natural light so taking pics is very hard.

as you can see, all it does is shrink the picture down to the bottom right hand corner, it doesnt actually move it to fit the screen. any ideas why this is?
