As I posted here, I just don't see the advantage over an Atom based ITX system. You're paying more for a much more limited and (I guess) a less powerful result.

I wouldn't assume it's less power Atoms are basically awful anyway. The power draw is less and it can handle 1080p video. Plus, it's much smaller than most Atom based PCs. It looks like a little switch box or something, but is an actual PC. I have a 1gb DDR2 so-dimm and a 4gb SATADOM knocking about at home, will house them in there and have a silent PC with no moving parts - lovely!

Any reason they are basically awful? They do what they are supposed to very nicely. No where do via actually say it will do 1080p all they say is it has HD support.

Reading reviews around the Via VX855 chipset (which is what this thing is based on), it will run 1080p in most formats although some cause 100% processor utilisation, which wont be good in a case that small, especially if it is fanless.

For the same price I can build a N330 based unit that has far more flexibility incl a dvd drive and a pci-e x16 expansion slot

And larger presumably . . . .

Remember the size of this.

Yup but if its being stuck to the rear of a monitor or tv size isnt really an issue. As mini-itx will sit their just as happily. But if size is critical then this maybe the box for you, although it isnt going to be that small with cables sticking out of it like a hedgehog.

The Atom is awful because it's an in-order CPU, Intel's first since the original Pentium.

Which is an advantage in few situation, very simple execution paths suffer fewer losses, but as complexity increases the Atom crumbles more and more.

I'm not saying the Via CPU is any better, just that if you are going to have awful performance, get it for less heat, power and noise... in a smaller package.

I'm getting this for a tiny Linux machine that is going to occasionally be chucked in my bag and taken to work. 1gb, 4gb SSD and no moving parts.

ermm no hard drive? no os?
Is their internal room for one? or do you have to link an e-sata or what?

edit
-ah the site has the connector ports open, so one can be stowed underneath, interesting

I have held one of these in my hand and there are tiny, although i think this is the newer version, the old one could also be mounted into a 5 1/4" drive bay but it doesn't look like this one can.
