I checked my online banking statement thing and saw a nice overdraft of £800!!!!! I was like ******** no way ive spent that much! I scroll down the transactions and there is a big hefty £280 paid to some "direct legal...." and some other purchases to T-mobile and Vodaphone! I phone up Barclays as soon as they open (7am) and the "direct legal" thing is a dept collection agency!!! OMG not only does some retard steal my details but he/she uses my account to refer dept collectors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel so violated! I hope i get the £400 back :( im only a poor student dammit. :(

whats worse is I have to wait for my new card and a fraud envelope thing and send a copy of the transactions highlighted to their fraud team. It then takes 10-15 days to process. So im poor for a month. :(

cards suck. We should have to provide finger print identification not stupid chip & pin junk. What were they thinking??? How much more easier is it to steal and remember a number compared to forging a signature?

Bring on ID cards! Or a better solution make everyone nicer :(

Mine was different. Not sure how they did it but they tested my account to begin with, taking more money out each time over the period of a few days, in total they got £120 before I noticed it on my bank statement. I got it back off the bank soon after too.

im quite lucky I decided to check my account balance because i was bored and had ran out of things to do. Would have been embarrasing if i had went to pay for something and got refused. Ive been busy with uni lately so didnt really look at my balance for about a month and low and behold :( this happens. Going to have to beg for money off my mum

Chip + Pin is Miles more secure, your a fool to think otherwise, its already cut fraud by millions in the uk.

Just be careful when you use it, use one hand to cover up what you tap in - if someone is to close while your doing it ask them to move away.

And as ive said countless times the a lot of fraud is just people who have lost cards and people have found them and used them - impossible to do with chip and pin really, how would they guess a 4 digit number! whereas before they could just sign the back - most retailers dont even check.

All the regular checks are in place also, Faud system monitor all card activity, so its not like they could go and blow a couple of grand - the system is more then likely gonna pick it up and add a referal prompting shops to ring for an authorisation.

Why people think a 4 digit number that you memorise is less secure then a signature that is rarely checked an easily forged is beyond me

In regards to the Thread starter - it does suck mate, maybe Barclays could increase your overdraft a bit so you have some cash, im sure they would refund any account charges too. It does take a little while but your bound to get all your cash back :)

Somehow I doubt every retailer who takes credit cards will have a biometric ID card scanner.

The cost for banks to implement this would be massive aswell - and everyone would need a biomeric scan aswell - i can imagine the queues now. lol

Unless your one of the unlucky ones who got caught up in the problems Shell had with Chip + Pin down south. Around £1 million taken from customers accounts so Shell have suspended Chip + Pin for the time being. Seems the card readers had been hacked and cards cloned. Tis a bit worrying if the card readers can be hacked.

Back on topic though, i had the details of my card copied some where and 2 lots of money taken out to pay for O2 top ups in Slough.
We rang first direct, they stopped my card, issued a new card, refunded the amount that was taken as well as sending me a form to sign.
First direct then take the matter up with O2.

Not to mention that biometric technology isn't anywhere near 100% reliable yet. But even if we went to all that trouble and spent the billions required, it would probably only cut card fraud by a tiny amount over what chip&pin already achieves anyway.

It annoys me to see people so easily accepting the need for ID cards basically.

Did they refund your card straight away?

Yea, because fingerprints will work over the phone.

I had my CC cloned in Canada. I was there in February and in my last statement, there were 9 new transactions - about £2000, all in Canada during two days in April. MBNA very quickly shut down my card and I will be getting all my money back as they also noticed it's a card I rarely use. However the thieves who cloned my card weren't too smart - they purchased gas (petrol)!

I had a call yesterday off one of my credit card companies investigating fraud on my account. Since Friday there had been £1500 worth of transactions made.

The credit card company will obviously sort it all out but it is worrying and annoying that this could happen, I'd also like to know how it happened :(

yep, rang em up as soon as we saw the transactions. Money came back and a form for me to sign was sent out.

I check my online account daily to keep an eye on money going missing.

I've been a victim of identity fraud though :/
Being billed for council tax in an area I've never set foot in and somebody also tried to open a credit card account. Luckily I already had an account with them and their fraud department phoned me to check. I'm now on the fraud prevention database so I'll show up every time somebody tries to use my details. Bit more a pain for me but it makes me feel safer :)
