O.k i have the Ati Saphire x1800XL 256mb & i want to convert my old video tape films into divx. What the best way to do this ?

Best application & cable to use.

Would using composite from vcr to s-video gfx card be o.k or better using s-video to s-video ?

Doubtful your vcr outputs s-video so you might aswell just use a normal composite cable. If it does, then use s-video as it's better quality.

I guess your video card has video-in? daft question but my vivo card doesn't even tho it's a vivo

I've found the best program called winvcr and captured video using the huffyv codec. You need to have LOADS of disk space tho.

Have a look on vcdhelp.com

The quality of converting VHS to divx would just not be worth the time and effort doing the conversion.

Unless they where home video recordings that cannot be purchased.
