Video conversion/compression etc

hokay, if ive got a clip on a mini dv tape/camera, what do i need to do to convert it to a reasonable compressed .avi or.mp4 file.

I have no idea what program to use. Can i do this with standard mac programs or do i need to go and grab some other software? Anything that could help would be much appreciated

iMovie will do it for you, or FFMPEGX if you want to get down and dirty with settings.

visualhub used to be the best but the guy stopped developing it... i think it got opened up to the open source community so maybe the replacement is out and about by now...

Indeed it is - Video Monkey is the replacement. I've not tried it because I bought and registered VisualHub and of course, it still works.

Video Monkey is still in the very early stage of development, it's probably an Alpha release but it's worth a look.
