Hi guys

I'm looking at spending around £1,000 on a PC / Laptop for video editing purposes. I got rid of my PC and peripherals a few years ago due to living arrangements, and am now in a position where I can reconsider getting a PC. Unfortunately it also means I haven't really got much in the way of peripherials besides mouse and keyboard.

With that in mind I'm not too sure if it's more cost effective to get a PC or stick to Laptops, since the monitor, case, etc will inevitably bump the cost up.

My requirements is really to edit full HD videos next year for various short film projects. If I go the PC route, the only restriction is the monitor size: I don't think I can accommodate anything bigger than a 24".

Beyond that I think anything goes! Really appreciate any help in advance.

Which is it then? laptop or PC?

Need an OS?

Need a monitor?

I do think the PC will be more powerful as you can go Z97/X99 etc.

Also is pre-built or can you build it yourself.

Thanks for the quick response guys, sorry I had to pop out briefly after posting!

I think I'll go the PC path based on the above comments. I'm happy to build from scratch really, which looks to be the recommendated approach.

I'm just going through the different components now.

Am I right in thinking that I don't need to worry about shelling out for a high end GFX card for video editing? I don't plan on doing much gaming considering the time I have these days!

Also, are SSD harddrives worthwhile for video editing purposes? Do they just mean booting up quicker essentially and benefit more for the gamers?

Many thanks :)

Stan

You dont need a GFX card, but it can be beneficial, or add one later.

SSDs are worth there weight in gold, much faster speeds and response than a regular mechanical HDD, faster boot times, better program responsiveness.

That case for example is was £100 and includes a free £30+ cooler all for £69, but you may want a silenced case and air cooler?

I noticed with the lack of a graphics card on my laptop, but then again it could very well be the CPU that's the issue. I don't know enough to determine where the bottleneck is necessarily.

But yeah, I suppose there's always the upgrade route in time!

Silent case may be a good idea as well actually, since video editing will involve sound considerations! There're quite a few listed, do you have any recommendations? I remember Lian Li and Antec being highly praised in my gaming days!

Well for your budget its that Antec P100 or Corsair 330R - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-144-CS

Heh thanks, I think you updated your post with the new list after I started my reply, thanks for checking the stock situation!

I think I'll look at the graphics card you listed higher up as well. I should still have my copy of Windows 7 & key lying around from my old build, so that should knock a few pounds off. I'm now looking at whether I should invest in a slightly more expensive monitor that takes more inputs to future proof it a bit.

Thank you for your speedy help!

Are you a staff at OcUK btw? Just don't wanna pushing my questions too much, but with the out of stock items, will they be shipped separately or can my order wait till all products are available?

I'm just thinking about delivery date in case I need to find someone in the house!

Many thanks again!

Stan

I am not shop staff, but forum staff.

Out of stock items either means the whole order is delayed untill all is ready to send, or they can ship what they have and follow the rest later.

Here is a cheaper GFX card - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-076-ZT&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1854 - but the one earlier is fully passive (no fans).

Items are also of sale for black friday/cyber monday so thats something to think about as if you wait too long prices will change.

More screens,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Iiyama Prolite XB2485WSU-B1 24" IPS Widescreen Professional LED Monitor - Black £239.99
1 x Dell Studio S2440L 24" Widescreen LED Monitor - Black £199.99
1 x Dell UltraSharp U2414H 24" Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor - Midnight Grey £199.99
Total : £662.89 (includes shipping : £19.10).

Try and stick to IPS for excellent colours/blacks/contrast, I also included a VA panel that tries to be quick for gaming and colours contrast for image quality, but IPS is best.

Cool thanks so much!!

Of course my housemate is now offering to sell me his old unit *rolleyes* but I'm going to compare the specs and see whether I can use part of it and get the rest here! His is an AMD build though which I heard isn't as powerful as Intel for rendering?

Whatever happens, I'll definitely be making a few purchases thank you :D

i7 is as good as it gets unless you go X99+i7 which is out of budget

A FX8320/8350 which is eight core will give an i5 a good spanking for less money.

Order placed, slightly deviated with the power supply due to it being not modular; and colour choice of RAM (£10 cheaper on the venom!). Managed to get it for £1059.90 :D

Thank you so much for your help, would have taken me days otherwise! Hope you get some sort of sales bonus ;)
