Hi all

Whats the best CPU for video editing and occasional gaming? The more cores/threads the better? Taking ages with my old Q6600.

Cheers

Yeah video editing / rendering uses as many cores as you can throw at it. Haswell-E is probably a good bet but don't forget that Broadwell-E is probably due out at some point soonish so you might want to wait until that is released.

Thank you.

Just note that the Xeon systems ranked above the Haswell-E systems cost major amounts of money :). A Haswell-E is a nice compromise between cost and performance.

Then again if you really need a professional system you can't beat a Xeon system.

What about an Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) (6 core / 12 threads) that should blast through recoding DVDs/Bluerays etc. I think the new broadwell/skylake are only going to be 4 cores.

Haswell i7 will be a massive upgrade for you. You could buy a mobo/cpu/ram combo for about 350-400 notes depending on how expensive mobo/ram you want.

If you want more than 4 cores, then Haswell-E will start at 550-600, again depending on how much you want to spend.

Budget is the only question really.

Your question is a little vague. ;) You should give an idea of what budget you have though if you're buying new now then then 6 core 5820k is your biggest bang for the buck and will be a huge improvement over what you have now, typically 5 times faster. Though if you're going second hand even a quad core 2600k with an average overclock will be ~ 2.5 times faster than what you have.

My advice for video work, then get any 6 core Intel; 3930k and upwards will do a good job. Should you have cash to spare then get the 8 core 5960x.

Hi, the 5960x going to be a bit too expensive. Budget is around £700. Only need a CPU, MB, Ram and maybe a new HD.

I'm thinking of going for the i7-5820k or the 4790K (not much of a price difference between the two).

For the 5820K I was going to get the Asus X99-A Intel X99 MB
OR
If I went for the 5820K the Asus Maximus VII Hero Intel Z97 MB.

As you can see, I haven't built a rig for years so it's a bit of a learning curve....again.

Need to suss out the ram next.

Cheers
