Video Editing Software to trim and compress

I've been using a paid version of Freemake Video Converter for ages to trim the start and end of video clips and then to compress, for whatever reason it just fails to launch now on my Desktop which is where I do most of it. I've litterally just wiped my pc and setup again and its doing the same again, goes through the install process and just hangs at registering files at the end, completely fed up with it now although it still works on laptop, tried all sorts of methods to uninstall and reinstall, followed their instructions but nothings worked, just sent off log files for them to see if they can suggest anything but i'm not too hopefull.

So i'm looking at some alternative software, the compression bit isnt vital but I need to be able to trim the video and as easily as possible, more than happy to pay for something if it works well, anyone have any suggestions?
 
VirtualDub2 will let you trim and compress videos. I've used it to exactly that in the past.

It might look complicated at first, but it really isn't once you find your way around.
 
Davinci Resolve is a professional-level video editor, and it's free. It might be a bit overkill for what you need, but it is a fantastic bit of kit, with only certain specialist functions behind the paywall.

For compression, I use Handbrake which, again, is free.
 
Thanks both will take a look, the reason i liked freemake was it did both at once and was simple to use, used handbrake previously will take a look at that again, just remembered i had a paid version of wondershare filmora and have managed to clip the video fairly easily and quickly with that
 
got a bit frustrated with trying and trying, i thought sod it ill install it on my Legion Go S, what do you know first time without hicup, thought id wipe pc again and only install the chipset drivers this time, installed freemake and it worked fine, so started to install adrenaline drivers of the onboard gpu and the nvidia drivers for my 5080 and couple of other bits and pieces and guess what it stopped working, sick as a chip.....

The first thing I'd try is unloading programs from the system tray one-by-one and see if one of those is stopping Freemake loading. Then try uninstalling software, again one at a time, and seeing if that one of those is the cause.

If you want to be thorough when uninstalling, use Revo Uninstaller and reboot after each uninstall before trying to load Freemake.

After I saw your reply I was wondering if it might be having Nvidia and AMD GPU software running, as before I installed both they both came up as microsoft basic display, i'll try disabling the onboard possibly, having said that my laptop and work desktop both have intergrated and dedicated nvidia gpus, but there both intel and nvidia and the handheld is just amdm will try what you suggested also
 
Feels like i'm loosing a never ending battle here but did a restore to the clean build this morning, probably would have been easier and better to do a clean install, this time did it step by step, installed windows clean no drivers, installed freemake, it worked, installed chipset, rebooted freemake worked, installed nvidia app which wouldnt download so cancelled, installed standalone nvidia drivers, rebooted, freemake didnt work, uninstalled all the nvidia drivers via control panel, rebooted and freemake worked but at the same time windows installed the nvidia drivers and all seems good, what a complete waste of a day lol
