Hi, for xmas my misses brought me a digi camcorder and i was wondering whats a good video editing software title ??

I know nero has "vision express" but its causes that many problems with my PC.

Im after something thats fairly easy to use

thanks

:) Adobe Premiere is possibly one of the best video editing softwares, but unless you work for a company that uses it , its really expensive.

Take a look around windows, and find the Windows Movie Maker, its not brilliant by anyones standards, but its easy to use and good to start with.

Rgds,

You can get Adobe Premier Elements at a fraction of the cost of the full thing and has more than enough things you will need for home video editing :)

For home vid use this is what I would go for. Failing that Pinnacle studio 9 is apprently quite good.

Sony Vegas will be fine for your needs chap. I use 5 different editing packages regularly (3 full pro) and anything aimed at the professional editing market will no doubt be overkill. Vegas is simple to use and should give you a good introduction to digital video editing.

I use Pinnacle Studio 9 and its a good piece of software.

Word of warning, video editing is prone to causing crashes on any system thats not perfectly stable, whatever software you use, so if vision express is giving you performance/stability problems those might not go away by using another package and you might have to look at your windows installation, drivers (especially graphics) and worst case even your hardware.

All other programs seem fine, its just vision express what locks up my system when importing movies,
My pc isnt oc'd and the spec is;
3.7 san d
1gb mem
7800GT gfx
DFI lanparty ultra D

Do you think my gfx drivers could be causing the problems ?? as im using the 96.89(by tweaks r us) drivers
My mobo drivers are the latest AMD series drivers

thanks

I'd try a trial version of a different video editing software and see how it behaves, and if it does give you trouble try getting the latest drivers by the manufacturers of each component on your PC, most important the graphics of course.

I remember having problems with Pinnacle 7 a while back, it would crash or not respond for ages when trying to manipulate video or replay it.

I installed the latest driver from the manufacturers of all my hardware and it made things better, but I still got the occasional crash, whereby using other software I didnt.

I then reinstalled windows from clean, all the critical updates, then the drivers and just a few applications including Pinnacle (but not all the other hardly used applications, junk and registry entries I had accumulated over time), and then Pinnacle worked perfectly.

In an ideal world you'd have a standalone, dedicated video editing PC :)

doh sorry my bad, i misread the video editing thing and took it as normal pic editing,

have you had a look at the windows movie maker, its in start/ all programs / accesories

What camcorder ?
Check the supplied s/w. The Panasonic stuff is OK for simple scene cuts and titles.
As said, Windows Movie Maker is also OK for the next level up of fades/wipes and audio track contorl etc.
I have Pinnacle Studio 9 for the more complex stuff.
Not (yet) needed to go as far as the more expensive pro s/w.

I find I still use all three options for differnet projects. Quick edits in Movie Maker for upload to YouTube through to full produciton for weddings on Pinnacle.

One word of warning, more expensive/complex can be daunting to use. I always recommend using MovieMaker till you get frustrated/find something missing and THEN you have a better idea for what you need next. Good luck and most of all have fun :D

I've been using Cyberlink PowerProducer and PowerDirector for a while now, and I find it very easy to drive and do what I want out of it. I would totally recomend a trip Cyberlinks webpage and downloading their trial versions.

It runs a bit like MovieMaker but has loads of customisations, and output options, I've made loads of great DVD's and videos files with it.

After starting with Pinnacle 7 I'm now working with 9 and it's really good to work with. Very intuitive and easy to use for both downloading and editing into a professionl looking piece. V10 has some advanced features but I'm waiting for the next version before I spend my money.

Uead do something similar as does Serif and Adobe with their Premier Elements. All three also do the job well I'm told.

Another Pinnacle user here. Like hethers I'm still on version 9 and waiting for the next version (or two) before I upgrade.

BTW Avid now own Pinnacle.

A vote for Sony Vegas here, Premiere and Avid are pretty good, but the learning curve IMO is pretty steep in comparison.

I don't think there is much of a learning curve with Avid, it's by far the easiest I've found to use, the controls and layout make this.
