Video File Sizes?

Hi all.

I've just captured part of a movie from my Camcorder using Virtual Dub.

It's compressed with Xvid at 400x300. The audio is at 48kbs mp3.

It's around 3 mins long yet it's 75ish MB? Surely that is too big?

I can convert it to .flv and it's around 10MB but the quality is awful, even with everything ticked to high.

Am I choosing all the wrong settings or something? :confused:

That does seem big. I compressed a 45 minute video to h.264. It came out at 250MB.

Check the bitrate settings, and make sure you use VBR instead of CBR.

Just the standard mp3 codec mate. I've got the lame one, how do I install it?

Also I thought divX was pretty much equivalent to xvid in terms of file size?

Cheers.

Xvid has better quality compared to file-size, but for what you are converting (3-mins) I don't think it will make much of a difference if using DivX.

To install Lame:
  • Get the Lame ACM MP3 Codec here;
  • Unzip the file;
  • Right-click on LameACM.inf;
  • Click on Install & hit Continue Anyway if Hardware Installation screen pops-up;
  • Start VirtualDub;
  • Open a video file;
  • Click on Audio > Full Processing Mode > Compression... Lame MP3 should be listed.
I've found that sometimes it helps to let VirtualDub do an audio conversion, i.e. Audio > Full processing mode > Conversion... Most of my videos I use a custom sampling rate of 32000Hz (then in the Compression tab i use 32000Hz, 96 kbps CBR, Stereo - 12KB/s). Anything below that (Hz), the video might not playback with sound on some devices. Also tick the High Quality checkbox.
