just wondering what format do most people store their videos in and what do they use to write them to dvd w/ nero.

Currently I'm Divx converting and then I have a divx dvd player however it doesnt have enough quality for my liking so want to upgrade my storage etc..

So any ideas?

Dont want to use too much space HDD wise as have a hell of a lot of vids (currently 600mb for an hour)

600MB for an hour is low, I have films that are 10GB for an hour.

What type of source video are you talking about here?

Some **** :(

768 x 576 mpg2
which is 1.9gb an hour

then convert to divx 700x400 codec6
which is 600mb per hour

Would i be best by starting with a better tv card?

To be more correct the divx;

Created with: DivX Converter 6.0.3
Video Codec: DivX Pro Codec 6.0
Video Resolution: 720x400
Video Framerate: 25.00
Duration: 01:49:58
Codec Settings:

x.264 for video and ogg for audio are best. Why are you downscaling the videos though? Dtv broadcasts are 720x576 reducing the resolution just reduces the quality without reducing filesize. Divx at 600Mb an hour isn't going to give you fantastic quality either.

It's all about bitrate. The lower the bitrate, the more the frame has to be compressed, loosing more quality.
H.264 is the best video codec avaliable, replacing DivX and XviD. However, H.264 encoding is still pretty early on.

Best way is to install Gordian Knot, and the X264 codec. GordianKnot is like a frontend which simplies the process without making it too Fisher Price.

Personally, I encode everything to 640x480 at the maximum bitrate you can fit on a CD (GordianKnot will calculate it). Others may say not to decrease resolution, but the lower the resolution, the less strain on the bitrate, and after deinterlacing, it's about the same as 640x480 quality-wise anyway.

Get stuck, Doom9 is your guide http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main6.htm

Dtv?? Whats that??

All i do is select mpeg2 high quality and then just chuck it into divx convertor and it converts it all so i didnt know it lower the resolution..

what does g-knot actually do??

Also is the x264 thing still going to work on my divx dvd player or is it totally different and can you burn the x264 files into dvd video format?

x.264 files wont work on a divx player, dtv is digital tv broadcasts. The reason that you should always keep the res is because it always looks better than the lower res version at the same bitrate. You can convert xvid files to the dvd-video format, I wouldnt reccomend it though because mpeg2 compression is so poor you wont be able to fit much on a disk.
