That connection between game soundtracks and getting into dance music is interesting. Was it the rhythm or the synth sounds that first grabbed you?
Streets of Rage would have been my first link between dance music and video games in 1992, i was 15 years old and was going out drinking, illegally of course, quite funny, boys from my school who i knew were older than me getting turned away at the pub door and my short *** but facial hair blessed soul getting me through the door
Most great tunes follow the same chord/steps across all genres, my first real love with classical music would have been adagio for strings, which i first heard in Platoon, which ironically enough became a huge trance anthem that is still played constantly today.
I used to hate drum'n'bass, still do for the most part but the tune that "changed my mind" was from F-Zero, of which i have searched countless times over the years for a killer cover. The original is still the best version.
My musical tastes are pretty vast, from Iron Maiden to Paul Oakenfold to Hans Zimmer to hell, even John Carpenter when he used to do his own soundtracks to his movies. Great music is where you find it.
I was even drunk enough to use Basil Poledouris soundtrack from Iron Eagle movie (guilty teenage pleasure) to do this
Great music is great music, regardless of genre.
