Video playback issues

Hi,

I'm having a rather weird and not to mention annoying problem when watching AVI videos on my PC. It happens about 95% of the time: I'll play a movie/tv episode or whatever, and sometime into the program it'll glitch out - it becomes stuck for a second and then the image goes messed up but then corrects itself.

It's really odd as I never had this issue with my previous install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (on the same PC playing from the same HD). I've tried different players (VLC, Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, etc.) as well as some codec packs, which I don't even need - I never had any of them installed on my previous installation of Win 7.

It doesn't do any of this when I play DVDs.

Any help would be great.

I was actually wondering about that prior to these issues. Is this actually safe to do as in it won't put more strain on the HD?

EDIT: I just checked an it isn't active. Though I remember seeing it active at one stage.
