So i got (well my dad did) a samsung le32m87 or something liek that (the 100hz version).. but was somewhat unimpressed with the quality, motion blur was nasty and it was very bright and tacky image.. it would probably make hostel look like a childrens program... this was the same for dvds... but however i plugged my nice pc in, played a dvd ( got all the codecs etc, and know a reasonable ammount) and motion blur was non existant, and the picture was brilliant, like watching a movie, not an overly lit documentary.... So i have 2 questions... if i bung a tv reciever in my computer could i get the same quality of picture (noting how a dvd played on the pc is much better than played on a standalone player) aka could i still fiddle around with video codecs and all that malarchy... Second question is, because virigin media hjave screwed us over, and frankly branson should sit on the naughty step, we were told we'd have 4mb broadband by now, but are now told thats not the case.. so will proably be switching to sky, anyways back to the point, could i route the image from the sky box through my pc using a tv card?..

thanks for any responses , and sorry i type like a drunk 4 year old..

One thing i would say about the 3 samsung tv's i have is that the default settings are vile...

They all come on that super bright, dynamic setting which makes the colours pop, flesh tones etc look awful though.

Some settings tweaking was required to get it looking much more natural.

On my tv's each input had its own settings, im assuming its the same for yours, which may explain why the pc looks a lot better.

What PhunkeyMonkeh is saying is correct - each input has different settings.

Take each input off Dynamic and put the DVD player input on Movie Mode. Put freeview/cable/sky onto "normal". Turn Movie Plus off if this TV has it.

My samsung Plasma looked horrific out of the box - half an hours tweaking made it look a lot better. See AvForums for tips on the setting for your particular screen.

EDIT:

Yes, the bright, vivid picture exacerbates the motion blur and makes it more noticeable in my opinion.

It could be having some effect - but unlikely to be as great as you are describing.

What's the standalone DVD player like - is it a nice upscaling one connected by HDMI or an old one connected with a cheapo Scart cable?

hmm.. ive looked and dont think that you can change the 100hz (some other forums say so).. i've got the colour of the picture to an aceptable level, but its the bluryness that hasnt changed...

You’re going to get that on a LCD set I'm afraid watching SD pictures, which is why I choose a Plasma IMO LCD are shocking showing SD, they come into there own watching HD and playing games.

well the thing is, when played through my pc the quality is good..

Well yes it going to be, DVD's will look better also, normal TV is low in bitrate, resolution and video quality and LCD's really show this, throw a HD feed into the set and it will come alive.

What exactly are you playing through your PC?

im playing dvds, but if i cant make the standard tv stuff better quality, then i'l route it throgh my pc using a tv card...

It’s still going to be the same, if anything the LCD you have will do a better job than buying a TV card, the broadcast is still the same resolution bitrate etc you will be wasting your time getting a TV card for your PC tbh if you expecting a much better picture, head over to AVforums and get some settings for your TV to improve the contrast & brightness etc.
