In terms of video editing/encoding which has the edge, Phenom II 940 or Q6600? At both stock and at maximum stable overclock? Or are they the same and it's just a matter of preference?

I know this question has been asked quite a few times, but it's mostly always about the best in overclocking and gaming.

phenom II is faster at stock as i believe as its a true quad core at 3ghz while the Q6600 is 2 dies and at only 2.4ghz. Also phenom II has "Fast Hypertransport 3.0 technology" which i believe is equivalent to hyperthreading on intels.

overclocked i believe with the phenom should go higher as its a black edition having unlocked multiplyer and a higher stock clock should give a higher overclock.

The PhenomII should give a better OC (It's based on the 45nm process rather than the 65 of the Q6600) and is already clocked at 3gHz! Most Q6600s will hit that, but top out at 3.2 or 3.4. The 940 should clock higher than this (Edleake got 3.8 on stock volts, http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=13449010).

With the same amount of effort, you can get the 940 a lot higher.

At the same time the Q6600 is cheaper, so they offer similar performance per pound. If you're going for great performance, get the 940. If you'd rather save a few quid you can't go too far wrong with the Q6600.

Agree with the above totally. The Phenom II is faster than the Q6600, overclocks better and runs cooler. But it is more expensive - although it's well worth the extra, imho. I have a 940 @ 3.65GHz and its excellent, fast as you like and very cool.

While I believe the PII 940 will certainly be faster than the Q6600 it does not have hyper threading. Also the fact that Intel use two dies and AMD use a single one has little to do with it.

The Q6600 is almost 2 years old while the PII 940 is relativly new, I would say if your after an Intel chip for video you need to be looking at a Q8xxx/Q9xxx so that you get the SSE4.1 which will help speed up encoding greatly.
