Whenever I hear 'Western Union Money Transfer' I can't be the only person who thinks of the whole process being carried out by an old-timer in a small room wearing a visor and communicating via telegram, and the Western Union office being located inbetween the coachhouse and the saloon... can I?

You're not alone :)

Scam, western union is used mostly for scams.

Avoid at all costs & report them - if on the 1% chance you are wrong then don't feel bad - but personally, I'd consider that at the same level as the following.

Ahh the classic "I can't afford the rent on this property but lets see it anyway".

What always amazes me about these scams is how little thought goes into making them appear legit. Why on earth would anyone go to look at a property they can't afford.

The reason ebay has this issue is because its very easy to click on a bid button from the comfort of your home. I personally wouldn't go down the supermarket, do my shopping and then go to the checkout and say "sorry chaps, can't afford all this shopping, just fancied wasting my time and yours".

It must be absolutely staggering how many people get scammed each year. When people ask whether this type of thing is legit you have to worry. Whenever they decide to pick up on it on the news its always shocking how poorly conceived the scam was and how on earth they managed to convince anyone of its authenticity.

The good scammers must just not get caught.

There is no chance at all that this is a genuine person you will want to do business with.

Your choice.

I'm surprised more people aren't saying this.

Why would anyone want to get involved with this arrangement, even if it is 100% legit. Whether it's a scam or not, it still screams nightmare situation all over it.

phone him up, if he speaks with a Nigerian accent and offers you tablets that can give you a bigger penis its definitely a scam ?

I did this.

Never got ripped off and came out 1400 quid better off.

Wait, you went to view a property after showing them proof you could pay rent and then they paid you £1400 for being able to pay rent. Sure....

The thing I'm finding most difficult to understand is where the hell you even managed to contact such a character?

Whenever i rented accommodation when i was at uni I did the daft thing of going to a solicitors office and getting a list of properties to rent. No problems with renting anywhere in Aberdeen cos of it.

Have you been looking at the adverts in the back of holiday brochures to Nigeria offering 'legitimate' deals on things?

Yep.

Turns out the lad was a rich Nigerian Prince who wanted to dispell the myth surrounding his nation/status.

Fair play to him I thought.
