Viewsonic VP920 vs VP930

Looks like I'm in the market for a TFT. I have a 5 yr old Iiyama Pro 410 and the picture now fades to black all the time. Switching off and on again usually reinstates the picture - until the next time.

I'm not a gamer. My needs are razor-sharp display (for document processing) and good colour (I'm an amateur digital photographer).

Have been looking at Viewsonic. The VP920 looks like bargain ATM. I therefore assume it doesn't have the same panel as the VP930, hence the price difference. Can anyone confirm?

Have also seen comments about the TN panels displaying 16.2M colours instead of 16.7. Is this a marketing number, or can the eye detect the difference?

If you are not a gamer, then VP930 would be better choice.
Yes, these monitors don't have the same panel. 920 uses TN+film and 930 P-MVA panel. 930 has better contrast, viewing angle and colours.
VP930 displays true 16,7m colours. As you said, TN panels 16,2m colours is marketing trick, because TN+film is 6bit panel and reaches nearby this number using dithering.
Personally I can see difference in colour quality between these two panels.
I'm also happy owner of this VP930, so I would dare to recommend it ;)

The VP930 is a P-MVA panel whereas the 920 is a TN Film as has been said. There is a difference in colour depth, but colour accuracy tends to be pretty decent in modern TN Film panels anyway. There is a lot said about the whole 6 bit vs 8 bit colour depth, but you'd have to be pretty good to notice a difference really in average use i would say in terms of colour reproduciton. However, if you're looking for a non gaming screen then it would be better to look away from TN Film panels as it would be a shame to make the sacrifices in performance that they do (poor viewing angles, lower colour depth, lower black depth, poor movie playback). If you can afford it, the VP930 would be better suited to your needs.

I tracked the OcUK monitor forum for several months when planning my move from my Sony Trinitron CRT to a TFT.

I found all the various reviews and comments invaluable - a particular thanks (of course) to Baddass.

As an 'all-round' user I found the TN vs MVA technology comparisons helpful - and checked out the many links forum posters suggested.

I looked at the VP720 specs and reviews. My conclusion was that the best all-round monitor in the 17/19" range was the 19" Viewsonic VP930.

So, I bought a VP930 a week ago.

I'm delighted.

No dead pixels or sub-pixels. Only the very tiniest of backlight bleed at the corners (and that's using a black display background in dim light).

Great true colours.

The brightness and contrast are, for me, spot on.

The thin silver-bezel is brill.

The adjustability of the stand is great.

Build quality is great.

I just wish that I could guarantee that your experience of this monitor would match mine.

But then, given current TFT so-called "quality standards" there is still something of a lottery in buying any TFT.

Thanks for these comments.

Hmm, I fear that the VP930 is out of my price range. Is the VP730 also a P-MVA panel? Or perhaps the question should be are there any other P-MVA panels <£300?

it's a TN Film panel i'm afraid. The Dell 1905FP sometimes comes with the 8ms P-MVA panel as used in the Viewsonic VP930. That might be a good option and if you get the 8ms version, as many people have recently tbh, then it's a very good screen for the price. Tbh, even if you get the 20ms edition which is what it is marketed as by Dell, then it would still be a very good choice for your needs. The 20ms uses a Samsung PVA panel offering all the pros of VA panel technology like the VP930, but just not as responsive as the VP930. This won't be an issue to you though really, and the 20ms offers excellent static image quality :)

more info here: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/guides/dell1905fp.htm

I'd also recommend the 1905FP as its static image quality is superb (having seen a few with the 20ms panel at work)

If you don't game then the slighly slower response time doesn't matter

Don't get the 1906FP though as this has a TN panel IIRC :)

Thanks for all the input.

After a lot of thinking, I bit the bullet and went for the VP930. What a screen!

Any tips on optimising the screen set up most welcome.

I've installed drivers from CD-ROM and also checked the VS site and the VP930 doesn't appear to be included in either the signed or unsigned drivers. Consequently, I'm now seeing "Plug & play monitor" in my advanced display settings. Odd?
