US: Vikings - anyone else watching this ?

Just finished this. Really enjoyed it. Season 6 was a bit unecessary and it jumps around a bit, but overall it was a good watch. I love all the Vikings stuff and it was interesting to see how their culture, their warfare and the world evolved.

I still can't get more than a few episodes into S6, just feels like it's going through the motions and Ivar is more of a cartoon villain as this point. I would love to finish it off but got to the point where he's flying with his new russian mate and the disappointment sigh I exhaled could probably be heard by the neighbours.

It's a real shame as I love the earlier seasons, S2 being almost perfect and the quality staying very good until around S4.

I heard about this show years ago, but never got round to watching it, thinking it was just 'another' GoT type show. Well over the last 2/3 weeks I binge watched all 6 seasons as I was so hooked.

My first thought is this show is AMAZING, from how they managed to actually make it look so real, to the character development and getting to know them, to the script. Literally a 9.5/10 show.... Until......

Ragnar died. I mean just WHY? He was the main reason I couldn't stop watching it, why I was so hooked, and just enjoyed every single scene with him in it for a variety of reasons. He was the show. It should have been called Ragnar instead of Vikings.

The show went from a 9.5 to a 6.5 after that episode. It was as if the writers decided 'Hey this show is too popular, let's make it less popular and make sure it tanks in the ratings and doesn't get renewed. Utterly bizarre. I couldn't care less if that's what 'really' happened in the past and they were making it realistic, it was a bad bad bad move from a making a TV show perspective. And the way he just gave himself up was so ridiculous.

After that the show just went downhill and downhill and downhill. Random unexplained things happening, but mostly killing off the rest of the best characters! I mean Bjorn and Lagartha, after Ragnar were the two best characters, and were there from the start, and they decide just to kill them off? Made absolutely zero sense.

The last couple of seasons were just so bad compared to the earlier ones. The first few I was literally pausing the show if I had to even look at my phone, as I didn't want to miss anything. The last couple I found myself fast forwarding scenes to skip them as it was just so boring! Not even mentioning some of the silly storylines that came up.

Anyway what started as an epic TV show that should have been remembered for being so good, by the end turned out to be a pile of **** which I wouldn't even recommend to bother watching after S4.

So... you were kind of right, then?
Lol well I guess in a way, yea. It's just disappointing that in the early seasons I was already thinking how I don't want the show to ever end, but by the last season I just wanted it to end as soon as possible and was just watching it for completions sake.

I tend to agree with your sentiment. I really enjoyed the first few seasons. I think Ragnar being killed off was historical if you read a bit about Norse history. I don’t know how much truth there is in some of the other characters but the key ones I think are all based on historical accounts.

Yeah the show finished for me, the minute Ragnar was killed off. He pretty much was the whole reason the series was as a popular as it was, and he was by far and large the one character that gripped me with his story line.
