Vince's Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Yea done the pins to board via multi, even checked from cart to via’s

Just had a thought on your megadrive... are all the pins properly making a connection with the cart when its in the slot? can you remove a pcb from a cart, plug it in and then trace it back from the cart to the console end?

thats a great idea, had the cart apart and reflowed all of the joints just incase, i will pop it in and test like u said. going to need a good desolder gun for removing chips, this manual pump is ok, but got my eye on a hakko ;)

I only use hot air station and sometimes my hot tweezers to remove chips havent invested in the desolder gun yet.

isnt it just! , think a good everdrive is needed :) . i did look up Zelda for the snes im fixing, WOW now thats almost as much as a few consoles ive bought :)

I want the two pokemon games I had as a kid, not a chance im paying what they are asking! Not a chance.

which are you after? ill keep an eye out for any deals for you :)

I'm looking for a boxed copy of blue for the OG gameboy and a boxed copy of Silver for the colour. But everywhere wants like £100-£200 for each one. I guess I could just grab the carts for like £30 or something. Seems crazy, just wanted to sort of have some nostalgia and a few genuine carts. All i have is robot wars and its not great, mind you with tetris coming that will keep me happy!

Pow!! £30 fixer upper box is here.. so happy with this one!! Dmg gameboy had a copy of tetris in it and is in great condition, one of the best I've seen recently!!

Fully boxed copy of sonic plus everything else, this really is an absolute bargain!! Later I shall have a little play, see what works and what doesn't. Can't test OG gamecube/megadrive pads etc so will have to just take it as it comes!!

With the dmg gameboy... it really might be worth shifting this as is, it's so clean and original, sound and the screen work perfectly...

And that same screen on my modded colour for comparison...

What would you do with the dmg?

I would be adding that to my personal collection, will defo hold its value

Still deciding! Did you know the pinout for the data lines and frankly everything for the sega is in the manual:

Super interesting as well it suggests that a black screen if that is what you are getting means you likely have clock signal but one of the other data lines is missing. I guess the best thing for you to start doing given this info is checking the continuity on the traces from the cartridge slot to the 68000 and the SEGA chip. the ones that data travels over are the VD0-VD15 and VA1-23 pins on the cart slot in the megadrive, these connect directly to the 68000 (IC1) and the big SEGA 315 chip (IC6). I am right in saying you had a black screen and no sound right? Oh and that it powers up!

After much messing about I have my master system 2 taking current - I don't have any idea if it works as dont have the correct RF stuff to test it... This then means that the only way to test with what is available to me is to AV mod this board! All you need to do this is a 16v 220uf cap, a 75 ohm resistor and some ports. All of this is on the way but until then I will likely move onto the next thing for a few days:

I found a lot of bad joints etc on this so ive had a good once over of the board already, its in a terrible state cosmetically with some broken bits on the housing, if it works though I do expect to make a little bit on it with the mods in place. Perhaps it will sell around the £25 mark if working and modded.

Few updates - The DMG is too good for me to keep. Id rather a tatty example that I can mod and not feel like I am taking another good example of a working DMG out of action. I think ill list this as is (with a small clean up) over the next few days.

The OG shell of my gameboy colour is listed so some money back there. I will also be listing some of the spare switch lite components to grab a few quid back on the stuff that is of no use to me. Over the next few days ill get the spreadsheet updated accordingly.

What’s the rf port look like? I may have one here you can have

A total mess... I have loads of RF's even a original megadrive one but nothing fits, tbh nobody will want it as RF only anyway so we will throw a quick AV mod in the mix. The only parts I need really are the RCA connectors so ill just await them.

With my new found love for my little gameboy colour I bought an everdrive cart :D Been playing tetris quite a lot today, managed a 850k score beating the previous owner  Couldn't be having somebody else at the top of the leader board now could we.

tetris DX looks great on this!

I think this my be my favourite so far you know.

I started a game called Mole Mania this week. Definitely recommend you throw that on the everdrive and give it a go.
Gameboy Color is the way forward.

Everdrive is a Chinese knock off jobbie so even that wont be here for like a month or something. I love the Colour but its still silly expensive to make a decent library.

I've got a few hand helds in the loft, original game boy, Sega Game Gear, DS, DS Lite.

All working.

Are they worth selling?

Some of them are worth decent money - original gameboy working depending on condition is £50 or more. Game gear - Depends if its working/recapped/boxed. The original ds are cheap generally but yea some of it is probably worth selling.

Yeah, I don't feel bad about piracy when the games are this old and prices are rocketing up. Game collecting is a rich mans hobby now. :D

I am for sure going to build up a little library it's just I would like to actually test a few games out and see what ones I would like in the collection as well. Tetris DX was an absolute must as are a few other titles but still at between like £30 - £350 for a game it's an awful lot of money to own and play on original hardware. I'm not sure entirely how I feel about it but there isn't really a better way to experience some of the library to decide what to buy.

so win win day today, 2 ebay dropoffs, a megadrive 1 for £12, and another GBA with power issues for 30 :) , so megadrive after cleaning the cart port and reflowing the power port is now perfect. works out the GBA is just the on / off switch!

Couple of decent ones there :) Whats your plan? Fix em up and sell them on?

Well I’m gonna do IPs on both gba , keep one sell the other , megadrive same keep one and shift on the other . Wanna try and get one of every console for myself as a collection. Always somthing I intended to do but didn’t . Just stripped the og Xbox apart and looking at it , came fully modded , wanna get board completely out and check the clock cap as they are know to leak and eat the board .

got a GameCube sat here to with a custom iced cube case on it , not even tested that yet :)

I need more toys to play with and fix on the bay, can’t see any good lots at the moment

Sounds like a plan, we are going to need pics of everything once done, you know this! And the thread needs this.

Your plan is sort of similar to what I am trying to do, I have no idea why as I don't really play a lot but I want a little collection. I kinda started on the handhelds and am trying to work my way to some bigger consoles and more vintage stuff. I used the profit out of the switches to give the wife a treat for xmas so that was pretty awesome. Currently playing with the software side of the megadrive mini running off of the 16gb plugged in and have been having a lot of fun modding it... I was thinking though there is still a spare usb port available on the mini so I could also give it wifi! Perhaps a project for another day!

I've got a ps1 mini also so might open that up and have a peek inside to see what fun can be had with it. If it's got a 4 port controller as well I think ill design a board to convert it to support 4 pads for a bit of fun, will still need to run wires from the IC to a daughter board but it should look a lot better than the megadrive mod. I have sort of come to a standstill for now until after xmas because im heading to Gibraltar in the morning to see my mum for a few days. When i'm back hopefully I can crack on with the master system, decide what to do with the DMG and look at the xbox. After that though unless we want to be restoring game pads for a while that we cant test, which doesn't sound like much fun, I think I need a gamecube, saturn, megadrive, snes and ps2 just to test the pads  So perhaps ill grab a few consoles if I can find any bargains.

The handheld collection here is coming along well though.. Some pics of the stuff we have restored and fixed etc so far! Not including all the switch lites... Which I did fix another yesterday but have given it away as an xmas present. Ill have to update th e spreadsheet on that at some point.

The handheld collection so far! I need to sort the shelves out and make it not look so packed!

And the growing games collection, a lot of these came with consoles and stuff. The psp ones I got on ebay cheap :)

Damnit I came into this sub to post in the FF7R thread.

An hour later I still haven't done it.

:D Easy way to waste an hour!

Adding this one to the list! Seen a little video of it on youtube and seems that people love it! Very much looking forward to my everdrive clone :D

Best thread I've seen in a long time :) Thoroughly enjoyed and have bookmarked this

Nice of you to say sir, something a little different from the norm! After xmas I think some retro Atari may be in order!
