Vintage yamaha dsp a2070 help

Have you tried powering up with nothing at all connected to it? Turn the volume right down, too.
It’s a strange one. Wouldn’t power up and then suddenly did for a few seconds and then it went off again. Now it’s back on but gonna try and give it back to the guy as it’s pointless if it’s intermittent.

He’s agreed to take it back for now..hopefully doesn’t change his mind by tomorrow!

It probably needs some of the capacitors replacing in the power supply. Maybe even the big ones too. The test is to whip the lid off and use a hair drier to warm up specific caps, one by one. A can of freeze spray to cool them down comes in handy too. Cold, an intermittent cap won't function. But warm it up and it can be persuaded to come back to life. Whatever though, if it's going back to the guy then it's his problem.

Is that Inter-M still available?

Not too sure about the inter m but I did see this Yamaha PC9501 N on eBay. Being Yamaha I’m sure the quality will be very good.

Just not sure if the connections on the back will be right. Also apparently it’s 1400rms per channel at 4ohms so might blow my subs up!

Ooh, that looks nice. Once again, RTFM and it will tell you all you need to know, but briefly

  • The round things on the front are volume dials, so unless you're a hooligan and try to run the amp with them as shown (at max volume) then you can control the power going to the subs. Fully anticlockwise to the sideways 8 symbol (infinity) is exactly the same as turning your amp volume down
  • On the rear panel you have a couple of switch settings which you should pay particular attention to:
    • Stereo / Bridged / Parallel - set this to parallel. A signal to INPUT A will provide drive to BOTH speaker outputs. It's like a splitter, but done inside the amp. Savvy?
    • HPF - I would suggest leaving this set to ON initially. This filters sound below 20Hz. You can't hear below 20Hz, and it's debateable whether those car subs will do much below 20Hz, but there's still signal below this point in Blu-rays which you'd feel with a whopping great big sub. For smaller subs it can create a bit of a problem though. They try to reproduce it, but it just generates distortion further up the frequency range. You can always come back to this later, once you have those extra subs properly integrated and when you're very used to the way the system sounds, then you can try with HPF sett to OFF and try to hear if there's a difference
  • Whilst on the back panel, remove that cover between the two Neutrik connectors. Underneath you'll find conventional speaker binding posts. Save the cover and screws in case you come to sell the amp at some point in the future
For a signal connection you will need ONE RCA-to-unbalanced-XLR-male cable. The wiring at the XLR plug will be signal to pin 2 (hot), and ground/signal return linked across both pins 1 (ground) and 3 (cold). So, RCA centre pin goes to XLR pin 2. RCA ring goes to XLR pins 1 & 3 tied together.

The RCA end of the cable attaches to the second RCA 'subwoofer out' on the Marantz.

Other than connecting up speaker wires and plugging the amp into the wall socket, that should cover everything about getting the Yamaha up and running with the Marantz and those car subs. Any other questions you have can be answered by reading the manual. The rest is about balancing the levels.

Thank you for that. Now just need to see if I can win the eBay bid!

With having so much power I guess it will future proof me if I ever get bigger and more powerful subs. Although there are a lot of active subs that look really good too on the used market.

You have read that this is a 'collection only' sale, right? The seller is in the North East, up in Hartlepool.

It also looks like he has two auctions running, different end times, but both Wednesday afternoon. However, it's the same pictures for both amps. I'd be tempted to ask if there's one or two amps for sale. If it's two, and you're happy to do the drive, then there's a better chance you'll nab one. I'd expect them to fetch significantly more than £100 a piece though, but with the economy the way it is then who knows.

Yeah I’ve been messaging him and he said he’d be happy to ship. He did tell me he had two so will see what happens with the bids.

I won’t be spending much more than he’s current bidding price so if the price goes up too much then goodluck to whoever gets them!

The 15mins that I had the 2070 working it made my subs thump so even with 160w rms they sounded wicked!

I missed one which went for £120. The other two went for £250 each lol.

I just got the inter m today and with a quick play, bass already sounds better in the room than before.

Now just need to figure out how to configure the subs properly.

Thank you for all your advice.
