Violent Game Questionnaire

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Only on children with issues already.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
It should be toned down(eg less gore) in under 18 games only

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

I would check the content was suitable before purchase.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

I dont think they take the rating system seriously

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

I think a game can get you frustrated and angry(from losing or not being able to perform a difficult task). But i dont think they make people kill or commit violent crime.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
yes and the same has happened with movies, rock music and even books throughout history.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Some seem overrated.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

As games become more mainstream and better understood, maybe they wont be seen as anti social and played by loners who are likely to go on the rampage. Perhaps people will realize that gamers are ordinary people too.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
yes, to a point. Kids do stupid things and often copy what they see, but i think most are sensible enough to not go to far.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No, but i would if i thought the game was rated to highly and i new the person who was to play it was a sensible person.

Depends on the age of the child and how extreme the videogame violence.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
In some games it is justified, you wouldn't really expect shooting germans to be left out of a WWII game would you. But sometimes it seems like violence is put in the game just for the sake of it.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
Depends on the teenager I was buying for and also the game but yes it would have an impact upon my decision.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
No. I feel that because it is a videogame a lot of parents feel it's fine for their kids to play it without researching it first or making an informed decision.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
Absolutely not. At the turn of the last century books were to blame for the actions of impressionable young women, in the eighties so called video nasties were to blame for social dissorder amongst young men. If you remember the hungeford massacre, Michael Ryan was a fan of the Rambo films and at the time that was bought up in the media. I personally think that there are many many attributes as to why someone could possibly go on a killing spree and the fact that they play violent video games is very low down the list.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Yes, most definately.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Yes.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
Yes as they are bringing gaming into the mainstream. A lot of non gamers are very ignorant as to what video games are actually all about, so this can only be a good thing.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
Not really. I don't really think that either are that influential tbh. It may well be the case in some individuals, but then they are quite possibly predisposed to be influenced by anything really.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
Yes.

Hi guys, im doing my dissertation at the moment on videogame violence and it would be great if you could answer this quick survey.

You dont have to give long answers unless you want to and any that you do answer would be a great help.

Thanks!

Heres the questions: (just quote me and fill in under neath to make it easier.)

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?

Only those who have not already been taught the difference between fantasy and reality, and the human price of real-world violence.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

Some games need excessive violence to increase impact, both in the gameplay and storytelling. Imagine "The Darkness" with no violence - wouldn't really work, would it?

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

It depends on the teenager. If they are known to be a functionally solid, literate, understanding teenager then the rating shouldn't matter. For the rest -- yes.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

I've seen enough parents in video game stores buying GTA etc for little 10-year-old Jonny standing next to them to know ratings don't mean squat. Hell, I saw a signing a few years back in Nottingham where Kane (WWE Wrestler) was signing books of his slasher flick "See No Evil". Plenty of very young kids walking around with their parents carrying the book with a nice big meathook on the cover. Parents just don't care -- if it shuts the kid up, good. It'll be someone else's fault when they go nuts.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

The games are not to blame whatsoever. This is easily realised by the sheer number of people playing said games who don't go murder other folk.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Exceptionally easy scapegoat. We've had heavy metal, horror movies, and now it's the newest easy target.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Across the board, pretty much yes.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

Nope.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

This can be far more influential. They have access and constant exposure to pictures, videos and issues which a lot of them are knowhere near mentally mature enough to handle properly. Granted, there are a lot of parents who monitor and restrict their kids' access responsibly as they should. See above for the rest -- keeps the kid quiet and out of sight = great. Someone else can take the blame when they rape and murder some poor soul.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

Nope, but my parents did it for me plenty over the years, both with videogames and movies. Thing is, they new I was mature and responsible enough from a very young age to handle such material as nothing more than entertainment.

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?maybe - but there are more detailed guidance ratings for games than there are for movies/music

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
it is dependant on the game/style/genre

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
i wont allow my parents to buy my little brother [10] anything that i consider to be too much for him [im 22 btw]

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
when i worked in a games store and gta3 came out - old ladies used to come in and pick up GTA for little johnny - i would try and explain - 80% of them got it anyway

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
[some]people are too influenced by the media - just because some model is all skinny doesnt mean everybody has to be -- just like not everybody who plays COD4 would be able to handle a Deagle well you see my point its not real etc

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?all the time
people look for something to blame

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?there have been a few i didnt think were rated high enough [too tired to think of examples]

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
possibly but there will always be the hardcore market contingent who want advanced - realistic/beyond reality roles that they can do something they cant do in real life - thats why we all play games

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?internet can teach to how to make a bomb - xbox cant
simple

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
no but i have been witness [as said before] to many that have - i think THAT is wrong
may as well go and get their kids 20 marlboro and a six pack

hope this helps - sorry for any mistakes - im pretty tired

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?

Yes.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

No.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

No.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

On the population as a whole, very litle effect. That said, there are a few who would buy/not buy a game based on the age of the child and the correspodning PEGI rating.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

No.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Yes. 100%

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Yes.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

Somewhat, although very little.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Yes.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No.

Whappers.

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Only those with minds easily twisted.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
In war games, and shooters, any amount of violence in allowed, provided it's partially realistic

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
Yup, i'd only buy a 15 game for a 15 year old, likewise and 18 game for an 18 year old.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
Stupid parents do stupid things, the parents usually ignore ratings, i've seen it first hand. I was even asked whether a woman should buy GTA:SA for her 12 year old, and I said yes....if she wanted him to see drugs, murder, robbery and sex within 5 hours of starting the game.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
Games are not to blame, only the individual

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Absolutley, media will pick the current hot trend, they did it with films as well

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
99% of the time yes, GH3 a 12? There's nothing bad in it at all

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
Nope, games like Red Steel give the user more control over the actions in a game, it's likely to increase the claims if anything.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
Yes, without a doubt.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
Yup, for my brother and my mate.

Hi guys, im doing my dissertation at the moment on videogame violence and it would be great if you could answer this quick survey.

You dont have to give long answers unless you want to and any that you do answer would be a great help.

Heres the questions: (just quote me and fill in under neath to make it easier.)

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?

Yes, but only if the ratings of the game are not followed. Young children are especially influenced as they are very serceptable, which is why 18 games have 18 certificates. To protect those who could become influenced.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

No, at times there is a need for voilence, same at times there are needs for compassion, lighting, music, etc. There wouldn't be much point playing GTA if you never stole a car and walked around with water pistols.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

Depends on the age and on the teenager. Example, if the teenager is 17, then yes I'd buy them an 18 game aslong as they are not going to go nuts over it.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

I suppose there is an argument for this. Without facts or some kind of survey it's hard to say.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

Soley to blame? No! Movies are more likely to be blamed, after all a computer game character is just that, you see more violence and realistic violence in an 18 rated film.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Yes, especially that **** Jack Thompson

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Manhunt, GTA, Saints Row, Bioshock, condemmed to name a few.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

No

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Yes, any thing is accessible on the internet. IF you wanted to look something up you can always find the answer. With a game you are very limited to it's boundaries.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No, but I've had them bought for me... Kingpin was if any one remembers that game

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?

Yes if they are young enough compared to the age rating

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

yes i do

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

depends on the teenager and the game.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

I would hope so, but in a lot of cases I dont think parents do pay attention.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

Definitely not

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Without a doubt, its the cool thing to hate at the moment, just as marilyn manson and metal in general was in the 90's.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Yes, in most cases.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

No, if anything i feel it will accentuate the blame placed on more adult games.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Yes

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No, but I would if I thought he/she was mature enough for it.

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?

No.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

Mostly justified, but could be toned down in some cases.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

No.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

Depends from Parent to Parent, but on the whole, I'd say yes.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

Never.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Yes, and it's downright daft.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Yes.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

No, If the media wants to percieve games in a negative light, it will.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Absolutley.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No, but I have had them bought for me.

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
I believe constant violence desensitises, So yes that is a psychological effect. Past that, Depends on the individuals state of mind.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

I feel gaming violence is needed in the same way gore is needed in movies, The New Rambo movie for instance, Is fantastic. And it wouldn't be half as good if they removed the realism of the way the weaponry works.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

Depending on the game content, I don't mind games like GTA/Manhunt/Suffering being played by teenagers, If i know they can handle them. However Magna cum Laude which also sports an 18 certificate, I wouldn't buy them that.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

Depends on the parent in the end, If they see a game a child has asked for, They will probably buy it, But if they see the certificate chances are they would discuss the reason for the certificate with the sales man. And then from that decide whether to purchase it or not.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

I believe that the reasoning for killing people comes in all shapes and forms, And I believe blaming a game for killing someone is as Crazy as saying God Told you to do it.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Definately, Sex in mass Effect being the latest victim, The Media don't even look at what these games contain, Graphic Sex Scenes in Mass Effect? Where? Did I miss them?

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Not always, Some 18 games I feel should be lowered to 15s, but not the other way around.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

I believe that any console is a target, If a game hits the market with a borderline topic that can be picked at, Chances are it will be.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Yes, As we've seen, People see fighting on youtube, bullying on youtube and actual abuse on Youtube. Not everyone is the same, But a lot of people now add their own Bullying/Abusive videos to you tube, It's a small amount of recognition they will get. And they crave it. You don't get any real recognition in video games (Unless you include achievements :p)

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
No, But my younger brother used to play my games. And I never minded that. But I never directly purchased one for him.

Yes its justified in most games

No - its a game and not real and my kids know this

Don't care for ratings - its a game and not real

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

No - you can still get violent games on the wii - doesn't have to have blood or gore in it to be violent

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?

I think this depends on the age of the child and their current mental state. I think it can affect them.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

I think it is justified.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

In some circumstances it might.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

Yes, but not always.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

No.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Yes

Yes

No

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Yes

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Possibly. But they have certificates, so it shouldn't be a problem. I played "Doom", "Duke Nukem", "Quake", waay before I was legally allowed to - I'm yet to kill anyone.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
It's justified - toning it down will certainly change the game for the worse, especially in the case of GTA.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
No. The game itself would, though. For example, I would buy a young teenager GTA but I don't think I would buy him Manhunt and certainly not BMX XXX. It would be my own judgement rather than the BBFC's.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
I semi-agree with this. Some parents don't care, some parents do. I think the opinion that "video games are for kids" is fast changing though, especially with the Wii being targeted at adults.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
Certainly, most definitely not. A normal, sane person can make the distinction between a game and real life, just like they can with a movie and real life.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Definitely.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
I feel most ratings are justified. To be honest, I can't think of any case where I've though "Woah, the BBFC got that wrong!".

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
I don't think the console will affect much, no.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
Certainly. If I had a child, I would censor his/her internet access to quite an extent. The internet is far more influential than a video game.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
I don't think so, no. But that's not to say I wouldn't. If somebody wanted a game, I would judge for myself as to whether I'd buy it or not. For example, I would buy a sensible 15-year-old "GTA 3" but wouldn't buy him "BMX XXX"

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
I'm sure it affects some. I do believe that 'young' children learn their behavioural habits from experience, and I can't help think that letting a 6 year old for example play games with gore/violence may have some negative effect on them. If you look at armed forces training, they de-sensitise the killing of the enemy by repeated habitual training, I can see some 'link' between this and a child continually playing a violent game.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
Like films, changing the level of violence can change the experience massively

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
I'd consider the rating, but then make my own mind up as to whether I feel it's suitable or not.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
Some people blindly follow them, like speed limits with no thought for appropriateness, others just ignore it as...

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
No, and it's impossible to know if a game or film was to solely blame, but I can't help think the general exposure to violent images/video doesn't have some desensitising effect that contributes

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Most certainly, I'd say that on a whole exposure to violent images has increased in all areas of media, the news included.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
Yes, but only in the way it seems consistent with a film's rating.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
Yes, I do, this much more 'wholesome' attitude towards the Wii will rightly or wrongly make people feel more comfortable.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
It's impossible to say from my perspective, but the distinction for me would be the games involve the 'action' of violence which is not the same as viewing a static image/video

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
It depends on the game and the age of the person, it's more about appropriateness for me, hence I'd never even consider giving an 18 rated game to a 6 year old, but a 15 year old, well that may change things for me personally.

I believe they have an effect.

No, you cant light a fuse without a stick of dynamite being attached to it.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Of course.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

I never look at ratings, so wouldnt even know what rating a game was.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

No, Manhunt2 is out for the wii, which would be one of the most violent games around.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Yes, in a few clicks children can access filmed suicides, accident victims, hardcore pornography and bearography, all more damaging that playing a game.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
[/QUOTE]

Yes, see me? Im a pure maverick.

On younger children, absolutely, less so in older ones. Young children are very impressionable and gain experienve from what they see in front of them.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
I think certain games take it too far, there is no need for the amount of blood and gore that appears in most games. The same experience can be had with no blood at all.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

Not really because by the time they reach their teens they have already seen more violence on tv than any game can offer.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

I think it has no effect whatsoever, and this is down to how the game industry is marketed as a whole. It should be more like films with shops taking responsibility and asking a parent what age the recipient of the game is and informing the parents that this game is for older people.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

Never in a million years, you see more violence on the news every day then you ever can in a game. Especially in times of War.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Yes, I also believe that video games are unfairly blamed for other crimes when movies and tv (which are more realistic) have much worse content than games.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
I have never really payed much attention to the rating, although games like GTA and the Darkness should certainly be 18+

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

Depends on the games rather than the console, there are games for the Wii (Resident evil for example) that contain blood and violence

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
I think all content is to blame not just one genre, games, internet and tv. They can all be influential in their own way.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No I only ever buy games for myself.

Thanks!

Heres the questions: (just quote me and fill in under neath to make it easier.)

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Not really, I think only people who have a violent personality are affected by Violent Games, Movies, Music etc. It wont make a "normal" person violent, but for an overly violent person it may give them some kind of thrill. Violent people play violent games because they enjoy violence its a symptom not the cause.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?

Would the Saw Films or Hostel work aswell if the violence was toned down and it was released as 12a film? As long as game violence is not used as the only selling point, ie look we have no story and the game plays poo, but look you can rip this blokes eyes out, i dont have a problem with it as long as it is appropriately rated.

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

If the teenager is say 14/15 for a game rated 16+ then perhaps a bit of knowledge of the game would be very useful why is rated that high? Is it down to say Bad language Violence Drug Use etc, and do you think any of these will be an issue with them. Ideally you should play the game through yourself or at least ask some one you trust who has and see what there opinion is of the game, then decide if its suitable for them.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

I would hope so, but like DVDs and music some parents do not care as long as it keeps the kid happy and quiet. Unless there is some kind of penalty involved then i cant see some people being bothered about getting an inappropriate rated game for there kids.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

Not at all, Games are this generations Heavy metal or Horror Films, something the Press, Parents and Politicians can blame instead of themselves. Also refer to my first answer as to why there's a shooting in a school for example they sometimes find violent games, films etc its a symptom not the cause.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

Yes pretty much, see above. If perhaps media sources played the games they were slating, see Mass effects Sex scandal, then perhaps they would have a valid point of view and not one that is laughable.

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?

Most of the time more, so than some movies, ie Beowulf should have been rated higher than 12a in my opinion. Think games are rated slightly higher as they are more immersive than a movie, you are actually doing the action rather than watching someone else do it. I understand why this is slightly different and for example in a movie you may see some one shot in the head a few times but in games it may happen hundreds of times of a game so surely its the violence is far more frequent and over a longer period of time.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

Its all well and good having a family console playing family games such as Wii sports, Buzz, Singstar, but the press will soon forget about those kind of games when the next big Shock game comes out. Regarding the Wii, but i feel using the wii-mote and nun-chuck for "violent" games is far more immersive than pushing a button and could be deemed more violent in the press in time.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?

Again it comes down to parent responsibility if there going to let their child use the internet without any form of observation then they should use all the appropriate measures to make it impossible to view content unsuitable for them. If not then there are far worse things that can be found on the internet
than in any game, and is just down right stupid of the parents to let them.

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No not at all, ive let my nephews watch me play a few games but only bits i know that are safe for them and stop before any thing they shouldnt see.

Q: Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
A: Yes, if they are too young and over-exposed, without correct parenting; say a 7 year old, who's mother & father are on the dole, who don't care about the child's upbringing, it may affect them and their judgement.

Q: Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
A: A: There is a level of which it should not go above, imho, ultra-realistic, photo-realistic violence is not where it should go.

Q: If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?
A: Yes, it would, what is the point of ratings if they are not adhered to ?

Q: Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?
A: the latter, unfortunately, and this is where the problems occur with the hatred of VG, they don't understand that ratings are frequently bypassed, which is usually the decision a parent makes.

Q: There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?
A: NO; parenting, upbringing, rules and regs, the childs knowledge of cause and effect and environment the child was bought up in all play very big roles

Q: Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
A: Yes, the media frequently twist stories to get viewers, this has been proven time and time again, with the media playing whatever cards they want, with no repercussions.

Q: In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
A: No, but standards change over time, C&C: red Alert was an 18  Which was probably a good decision at time of manufacture, but it seems very over-rated looking back.

Q: Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?
A: Hopefully, but violence against T.V's will soar :o

Q: Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
A: I would hope the children are monitored during their early years online, as they get older they should know how the 'real-world' is.

Q: Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?
A: Yes, myself; it was C&C: Red Alert. :p

Do you feel video game violence affects children on a psychological level?
Yes, but it is highly dependant on the quality of their upbringing.

Do you feel that videogame violence is justified in the games that feature it or if it could be toned down and still offer the same gaming experience?
No. Would Shakespeare's Scottish play be the same if Macbeth was to keep his head at the end of the play?

If buying a videogame for a teenager would the rating on the box affect your decision on purchase?

Yes

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

No

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

No, most of these cases have been in the "Good Ol' USA". Their society has to be most morally & socially decayic I have ever seen. (I make at least 8 trips to the US a year)

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?
Yes

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
I have never looked at the ratings, If I like a game I play it.

Do you feel that family friendly consoles (such as the Wii) will reduce the claim against the violent claims against games?

No, may further increase it, as the console has a more wider user base.

Most children who play videogames also access the internet where content involving real crimes is much more accessible and uncensored, do you feel that this would be more influential to kids rather than playing a game?
Yes, that & the news

Have you personally ever bought a game for someone under the age that it was intended for?

No

Depends 13-15 possible 15+ not really.

Do you feel that ratings systems have any effect on a parent buying for a child or do they just generally see it as “oh well it’s a videogame, it’s made for kids”?

Rating systems are not hightlighted enough, games stores do little to stop people purchasing games for youngsters.

There have been many cases in the last few years where a videogame has been blamed as the cause for a murder or violent crime. Do you feel that the games are solely to blame?

Nope there can be no single factor that makes someone commit such crimes certainly not a video game.

Do you believe that in these cases that sometimes videogames are used as an easy scapegoat by the media?

In the games you have played do you feel that the rating it was given was justified?
