Youtube streams quickly for about half a video and then stops without continuing. If I promt it by clicking after the point it stops at, it will continue at full speed.

Steam has been giving me jip too whilst in game. I get disconnected after roughly the same length of time until youtube stops.

Seems to just 'forget' that it is meant to be doing something. Browsing seems fine.

Suggestions greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the replies

Based in kingston upon thames- speed is fine And it has been for two years. All of a sudden it seems to have developed an issue where it hangs until prompted. This is bearable on youtube but not in game where i auto timeout.

I downloaded some large files about seven days ago but this issue has just started. Woulnt have thought a cap would last three days And cause my connection to run at full speed but hang whilst streaming com in game.

Keep the suggestions coming :)

Sorry for the limited explaination earlier - I was typing on a cheapy tablet which seemed to think that every two letter word I wanted to write was "Tim". Alas, it was not so I gave up trying to go in to detail.

Lots of virus checks, lots of clearing history etc. (I'm running Firefox incase that is relevant).

The speed of my connection remains really good - webpages load as usual. Perhaps it is just maintenance in my area, I'll check it out again when I get home.

Thanks once again :)

*Edit* I'm also connected to a router.

Shameless, bump - I'm sorry but I'm at a loose end, even after trawling through Google for advice.

Just to re-cap;

1. Webpages and normal browsing seem fine.

2. Youtube videos will stream at the speed I am used to then stop... until prompted to continue, which they do at normal speed again.

3. Online games, such as TF2 run in to connection issues after about 1-2 minutes of play and I get auto disconnected (everytime, different servers etc).

It would be great if people could suggest any diagnostic tests which may reveal the problem.

Speedtest.net gave me these results;

Download: 8.65
Upload: 0.34
Ping: 25

Just at a bit of a loss where to start tbh so any help would be greatly received!

Check Virgin media's website mate. your not on your own :(

My area has been like that for months over-utilisation at peak times.

I've spoken to tech support in the UK who told me the cabinet I connect to will be upgraded on the 29th July.

They are just running it into the ground to many customers not enough bandwidth its a joke. The tech support guy put £30 credit on my account but its not enough I want them to provide the service I pay for.

I've had a similar experience, for 18 months. I was stupid and trusted that they'd fix it. They still haven't. The worse thing is, I've only got 3 months of 18 for free, the rest I've paid for. Absolutely disgusting to be honest, and they won't do any more.

Whats the fair usage policy like on Virgin?
Unfair

gave a call 1 hour ago about my slow BB speed, after going through the account details and telling him about my problem - seem to have a problem of their own with their systems as the indian guy tells me to call back after 2 hours as he cant find the my account details!
At this point I thought not to discuss any thing with him, it may be a real system malfunction in their end but whats the point of talking about my BB problems when they have more issues than mine!
Gona give them a call back in the morning, may be I will speak to a UK help centre.

Hey guys,

Thought I'd do what I can while I wait for help - this is the tracert result from the BBC site:

I removed the router from my setup and tried with modem only - this seemed to help greatly, however I suffered from a drop in performance - but at least I wasn't getting auto-disconnected or struggling too much streaming.

Does anything which I have posted above indicate a problem with the router? It is about five years old now so it could just be on it's last legs.

Looks like congestion locally, as you're getting up to 30ms latency straight away (and have excluded the router). Here is my VM tracert to the same IP.

Duke - many thanks for the reply!

So it could perhaps be oversubscription starting to show itself?

It was suggested that the power levels are also fairly high - is anyone able to second that? The data was posted earlier. Greatly appreciate all help!

Awesome - many thanks Duke. As you can tell, I'm not well versed in networking issues etc.

Thank's for highlighting the potential problem for me - now I have something specific to mention when I call up support, assuming I get through.

Props to you Duke - you've been more helpful than the people on several other forums. :)

No problem :)

It does sound to be either a modem power/signal issue or congestion on your local UBR.
