the ? is because i'm not sure but from what i knew, a few years back mind, the ondemand was completely non existent, less receivers as mentioned, less space, can't watch a program whilst browsing the tv guide
I'm aware it will run out of space, but i see no reason for it to be an arbitrary 1 hour rather than being able to set it for when it runs out of space (i.e. in about 200hrs given the amount of space we have free at the moment! )
The reason for this is because the hard drive is partitioned. Timeshift has its own partition and recordings have their own partition. It is set up like this to reduce fragmentation. IIRC the TS partition also has a different file system to the recording partition.
Remember, the timeshift feature means it is constantly recording that stream. If TS was mixed in with normal recordings, the hard drive would just get more and more fragmented every second and would eventually get extremely slow.
