My mum is on virgin, she uses the standard cable modem. Its been years since I fiddled with her setup, and I remember originally I had to register her NIC with NTL to get an IP address etc.

Has that changed now? Can I just bung an old Dlink wireless cable router next to the cable modem and it'll all work? Or do I have to contact Virgin and register the MAC of the router?

You won't need to contact virgin no. Just power everything off, then power on the modem and router and it'll be fine.
