Interesting.
I don't recall VM mentioning this on their TOS or any change of TOS.
They are blocking a website I pay money to subscribe to, this is rather irritating.
Thankfully the rs27 seems to work.

We'll see if the situation is resovled by tomorrow, and if not, I'll be phoning up to ask why.

it works when i type in https://rapidshare.com . im from Birmingham and a virgin customer this just started occurring today its the same with megaupload.

im very ****ed off at the moment , i might not be a virgin costumer for much longer .

Not getting rapidshare isn't the end of the world, there are plenty of other free file upload sites if you need to store some large files online :)

non virgin isp here, rapidshare seems fine for me....

The "rs27" trick working for me. Others reporting https working too (although i can't verify since my version of wget doesn't support https :o )

edit: 195.122.131.250 works

As a long term user of both VM and RapidShare (Premium Account holder), I would just like to say the following:

If RS is banned permanently at all times I will not be happy, however if the ban is supposed to only be in peak hours 4:30 - 10PM then frankly I don't care. People who download too much during peak hours are being selfish in my opinion and should download large files outside of peak times so network performance is kept good across the board.

However, it's now 1:30AM and I still can't access rapidshare.com normally, as such I suggest those who want to use it add a hosts file entry to their PC's so it works still.

Here's how:

1) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

2) Find the file called hosts, and open it with something like notepad.

3) Add two new lines as follows:

195.122.131.250 rapidshare.com
195.122.131.250 www.rapidshare.com

4) Save the file.

5) If you get permissions errors (i.e it won't save) you will need to right click the hosts file and go to properties > security tab then ensure you've added your currently logged on user account with full access permissions to the file. You can now save the file again.

6) ???

7) Profit!

Works ok with 'opendns'.

I've switched to OpenDNS, flushed the DNS cache and rebooted the router and I still can't access it. I don't even use RS but it's the principle of the matter. Barring extreme cases (child porn, incitement to terror etc) I don't want an ISP that blocks any sites - that's not their job.

EDIT: N/M, a second router reboot and cache flush fixed it. I can confirm that OpenDNS loads www.rapidshare.com just fine. I'm on the 50 meg service.

Like if they didn't cap your speeds by 75% for 4 hours I believe after downloading just few GB if you are on anything less than 50mb wasn't enough.

Anyway, free 7 day usenet from VM rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From VirginMedia twitter...

Folks - we are aware some customers unable to access Rapidshare/MegaUpload - we have NOT blocked these and are urgently investigating

It says it was an accident. I don't know how these things work, but it's a very specific accident. I wouldn't be surprised if they were testing the water, their network is dying at the moment as it can't cope with demand.
