Virgin/Fibre optic annoyance.

Hey guys, I hope this doesn't turn out to be too much of a long post, so let's just dive into it.

Last June/July we've moved house, we've literally move 10 minutes away from our old house, it's not too far away, so it shouldn't of been that much of a problem, we had started to move stuff into the new house and I gave virgin a call, I basically said to them, "I'm moving house and I want virgin in the new house (obviously) and am I eligible to get it there? He checked and he said YES", so I was like 'great, fantastic' can't wait to move, bigger house, same broadband, all seemed great.

We paid the bill, I was on 50mb + XL phone/channels, so my bill is rather large, it can span from £120 and onwards, anyway, the engineer came the money after we had moved which I was again happy about, looked like we would have been up and running sooner than we had hoped, I was asleep while my mother answered the door, she then comes upstairs to tell me that we are unable to get fibre optics here therefore no tv, and therefore no internet either, this ****ed me off like no other.

Now, two things ****ed me off here:

1. We paid a bill of £160+ a few days prior to this pathetic piece of ****.
2. We were told that our new location is eligible to receive Fibre optic broadband, phone and so on.

So we had to change providers and go with 'Sky', terrible ****ing switch, so as opposed to being on 50mb down and 5mb up, we are now on 3mb down / 1mb up, to some this may not be a big deal, but i'm a heavy downloader, heavy gamer and a streamer (was a streamer) and i cannot do most of that now, downloads take forever, gaming is annoying as there's not only me who uses the intenet here.

Now granted that this did happen over a year ago, nothing has changed in regards to 'virgin', they have not upgraded their service, no new plans for increased fibre optic areas have been mentioned in any news i've read, i went onto their website to ask them a question, I asked them, "Are fibre optics going to be available in my area, (post code here)" and they couldn't even answer me, it's pathetic the level service that these guys give.

I am over reacting a little bit, i must admit, but it wasn't all bad, i was at Uni from sept-june and the internet there is 20mb/2mb down, so that's not bad, but to come home to this horrible internet, it's just daunting.

Another thing or twothat had my mind absolutely boggled was the following:

I've got a friend that lives literally 5 minutes away from myself, he lives behind my, where there is a small bridge and fields, he is able to get virgin also, so this makes no sense.

The other thing is that my previous address, it's down back roads, so for example, to get there, you turn left off a main road, go straight on, turn left again, go around the corner and left again.

My new house IS RIGHT NEXT TO a main road, it just boggles my mind.

Sorry for the rant but, has anyone else had problems like this?
bad service? promises of things that have never came and so on?

Just because you are right next to a main road doesn't mean Virgin cabled tat part of the street.

I had a friend who moved from one street to another in the same area, and after being told the area is covered found that the block of 4 houses his property belonged to were the only 4 houses in the area not able to have cable due to a disagreement between Virgin and the developers in regards to laying a duct under the pavement to this block.

Not sure if you've explored this option, but if you want cable still you could give it a try:

had an even stranger problem when i moved into my new house, i'm on a main road and every house around me was listed on the virgin website as able to get fibre optic, my address wasn't even on the list, ended up getting in touch with virgin and had to keep on at them for a couple of months before i got setup properly.

if you enter your post code on the virgin website does it show you as being able to receive fibre optic ?, if it does get in touch with virgin.

are you on sky's llu service ?

@PistolPete, I haven't explored that option but I am more than definitely going to do so right now.

@PhillyDee, I phoned them back up and talked to for a while and they're crap excuse was, 'Sorry sir there must have been a mix up with the computers here, we are terribly sorry about this, you're always liable to try out our phone line service broadband if you so desire', I declined this and proceeded to ask why isn't it available in my area?, he then gave me some crap about this or that, I can't fully remember, I then proceeded to ask them if I would be reinbursed for the £160 I've just paid and the fact that I've been a loyal customer for 3-4 years, but nope, nothing.

@mp260767, It's strange you suggest the post code thing because before hand it said I could, but after virgin came to my house and my phone call had happened, it was changed to 'this is not a fibre optic area'.

LLU service? i'm not sure what that is, but i'm currently on the sky unlimited service.

If there is nothing to be returned then i assume the £160 'charge' is actually just your bill then? If it's a charge for service you have used then there wouldn't be any refund due of course, though if there is any money owed for services paid in advanced/etc then this would need to be returned of course.

As for the mixup, while it's annoying it sounds like they have apologised for the issue and fixed the mistakes on the system/website, so i'm not sure what else you expect them to do?

Just like someone else mentioned above, even though the fibre optics in the area might go right past the end of your street for example, if the developer who built the housing estate/road didn't have the foresight to contact Virgin at the time they were building the road to come and install their fibre optics, then you're all out of luck. You'll find most developers are not bothered about it as they know BT will be there putting in phone lines and that people will be able to get internet through those.

Obviously Virgin should expand their network to get more customers on to their cable packages, however retrofitting in to an existing area is a lot more expensive than installing when the roads and houses are in contruction.

as pistolpete mentioned check the virgin forums, i haven't got the email so can't remember which department within virgin i spoke to but they might be able to help.

LLU service? i'm not sure what that is, but i'm currently on the sky unlimited service.

thats their llu service as far as im aware, which is supposed to be one of the better ones around, unless you've already checked them post your router stats up.

I was with Sky once; hated it. When they throttled me I got speeds of around 0.6mbps download and upload. The only time I got more than that was in off-peak times, and even them speeds were terrible. I'm now using Virgin, the best ISP in the country in my opinion.

Maybe you'll be in luck when BT roles out optical fibre to your area.
