Virgin Media 20MB installed :)

Welp. The damn thing doesn't work. The ready light is on my modem and when it's wired straight into the computer via ethernet, nothing loads up. My NIC is on DHCP, everything to auto obtain. I am able to autoregister the thing, but the internet doesn't actually do anything.

Tried powering off the Modem for 10 - 15secs?

This reminds me, I must give them a ring. Was on the 10meg NTL package only the Virgin package of the same price is 20meg. Hope its as simple as pluging in a new modem.

Yup *** CD was required to run the modem configuration as it registered me as a new user to the service

You don't need the CD, I just went to their autoregister site and entered and registered my details, rebooted my modem, router and PC ,all done(this is with Vista x64 btw).

No engineer came round as we already had NTL in the past so nothing needed mounting, just plug in cable and go!, they posted me a box with a humorous caution:

The box contains 2x Coax leads with splitters and covers as well as (what appears to be at least 10 metres of) fat CAT5 cable and of course the black modem - mighty nice package tbh.

I replaced all my cables that were included in the box,ie using Belkin shielded CAT 6 cable,Belkin PureAV 2 way video splitter 5hz -1000hz (for splitting tv and cable signal) ,plus Belkin blue series PureAV RF coaxial cable 1.8m (3 of them, one from VM main box to splitter, then one each to TV digital box,Cable modem) I even replaced the main feed coaxial cable to CT100(double shielded/copper) high quality cable(better then the aluminium low quality crap I had with Cable and Wireless, yes it was that old lol.).

TV pic quality is better and better solid cable signal :) ,btw I'm on third floor of house,so main feed is on ground floor (we have two TV boxes, one on ground floor, and 2nd tv box on 3rd floor of house).
Info on cables below.

Ah, does anyone know how long the engineer usually takes for a new install?

Just had mine installed today. Two people come in a van and put the cable up to the wall and take just under an hour because they didnt have to do much digging as its through the hedges mostly lol. Then another guy comes along bout 20min later to fit it in your house. He took under 30 min for us as it was just through one wall. Depends where you want it.

Yeah I tried cycling it several times. It seems to be working now. Is it always this tentative?

it can just take an hour or 2 for new installs to show on their system and be activated so it should have just been a one off :)
