Virgin media cable activation

Having problems activating virgin cable broadband. The engineer came round and connected & activated my Dad's PC but I'm unable to activate mine. I'm jealous of his download speeds! :p

It says to open a browser and type 'activation.virginmedia.com' in the URL which I have tried but keep getting the 'this page cannot be displayed' error message. Everything connected up correctly, looking through the network settings and everything seems normal...

Just for the info, I've got AOL running fine at the moment - just having trouble activating virgin :o

Any help much apppreciated!

Are you connecting both pc's to the virgin cable via a router?

Hardwire connected my dad's PC via the modem provided by Virgin - everything works fine. Did exactly the same to my PC but I can't get onto the activation page.

We were out of the house when the engineer connected my dad's PC up so didn't see if he did anything different than what the manual tells you to do.

Power the modem off before plugging it back into your system and try again, though you'd be better off getting a router so both can have internet access.

It's because it has been 'activated' to the NIC of your dad's network card. When you connect the modem to your PC a simple reboot of the modem should allow you to connect, but then your dad won't be able to connect when you swap it back to his PC untill you reboot the modem again.

Why are you swapping the modem between your PCs anyway? Just get a router and share the connection properly...

Yeah, ordering a router tonight. Just wanted to check out that everything was working fine and we could get ourselves activated :)

Thanks for the help - I'll try in a sec.

Are you powering down the modem too? the Virgin modems are so picky sometimes, turn it off for like 1min then let it reboot after you've restarted your PC.

Edit: I see you tried that above :( seriously though keep it at, mine is just the same!

Activation involves activating that modem on VM's network, nothing to do with the NICs in yours or your dad's PCs. It only needs to be done once.

If you want to connect a different device, for instance your PC instead of your dad's, or the new router when you get it, then you need to power the modem off, and leave it off for 30 seconds or so before powering it back up and connecting the new device.

If you still can't online the obvious thing to check is that your NIC is configured to obtain IP addresses automatically, then look at what IP address you're being given.
