Now i have my connection up and running, can anyone recommend a good cable router with 4 ports and one that they know works with no problems on virgin cable service. I've heard there are a few that aren't really compatible with their service, hence me asking advice.

Thanks ;)

I've had both a Netgear RP614 router and now a Netgear WGR614 (wireless) - both have been 100% stable.

I'm running a WRT54GL flashed with Tomato...that's what that graph is from.

Has been working seamlessly for me the last few weeks...had it since mid Jan.

get this router.
that's a 4mb connection (or running at 4).

Thanks for the advice on router, can i run this straight from the box as is and not have to update firmware etc?
I'm on to them (VM) about this so called upgrade i asked for and was told was actioned to increase to 20mb. Could there be a problem with the cable modem they installed to cause it not to go upto 20mb?

Thanks

to get the up, you probably have to disconnect modem, then plug back in

upgrading to tomato is really easy

Depends where you are :)
On a UBR that isn't oversubscribed it is amazingly quick, on heavily congested UBR's it'll drive you insane :)

Agreed...and it did...never again for me.

Its a complete postcode lottery with cable, get a bad UBR area and it will be the worst internet experience imaginable.

Unfortunately theres no way of knowing if your in a bad area until its too late.

Just a question.

Ive just moved into a brand new house, and we have the cable outside, but Virgin have said they will come, dig the front up to lay the cable, then install their own phone, broadband points etc alongside the existing points. This is all under the £30 connection fee.
Im a bit worried about all this installation. Is it done professionally? Will they rip into walls? Will there be wires everywhere? Any advice would be great :)

No... H&S wouldn't allow anthing but a decent job.

I have a cable running along top of the wall then into the house. They will make good any digging they do but if you can try and run it some where descrete then even better.

Inside, the cable runs straight into the terminal. Neat and tidy!

Never had a problem.. Even when I accidently cut the cable they repaired FOC

Tell 'em I recommended you and we'll both get £30!

:)

Virgin are a class act been with them since the telewest digital days never any problems also i remeber my networking teacher going on about that router WRT54GL might get that next week.

I've had Virgin Media (used to be blueyonder) for many years now. The support service is good, but in the past months they have been capping speeds severely during peak hours. it's really annoying. I go from 450kb/s to 100 kb/s in downloads; and ping goes up too.

Virgin media are pretty mediocre, if its bog standard internet thier ok, if you want to download a lot, use torrents, or are an online gamer, beware they do throttle you at peak times!

Seems a few things have changed since I was on Telewest/Blueyonder/VM.

I had an excellent connection speed, etc but changed to Sky ADSL (as a package) when VM lost the sky channels.

High prices have already been mentioned, but, unless they have changed it, there T&C state that you can only connect 1 PC to the router. So using a different multi output router and multiple PC's may cause you to run foul of they're T&C.

Well after a few weeks now got a problem solved which for some reason i was getting 4mb instead of the 10mb i was told i was on automatically when signing up to VM, i upgraded to the 20mb thinking great i'll get better speeds.

How wrong i was judging by this.... Last Tuesday's reading

This morning's reading

I've since tried to get someone from support to look into this, they say all tests on the cable connection are fine with no faults showing. I'd beg to differ saying something somewhere isn't quite right either with the Cable? VM Modem? Or something else not sure what.

I have the following system etc....
Apple Mac mini, Apple Time Capsule (Wi-fi 'N' standard) linked to VM modem.

Would anyone care to say if i have some inferior equipment in my setup or is VM really that ***p?

Thanks.

I note that your in Lancashire from your profile. Any chance of you doing a reverse DNS lookup - http://remote.12dt.com/ and posting what UBR your on.

Peak time speeds for me are about 1-2Mb and 3am (!) I get nigh on 20Mb - however VM know about the problems on my UBR and cba fixing it (read my previous posts in this thread).
