Hey all, I don't knows if this is just happening to me or any others.
But I pay for the Large broadband package which is 10mb.

But over the past week or two, My internet speed has been dire. My max speed when downloading is around 80-110kb/s where as I should be getting 1.2mb/s.

I've had a chat with some people on Steam who are on virgin media and they say they are getting simular problems.

I just want to know if anyone here has simular problems, and if they have dealt with them.

Oh here is a speedtest. Although I think its bugged.
The clock goes to 4.5mb then drops slowly to 1.5, Then jolts to 80+mb.

My actualy Download speed would have been 1.5 - 2mb.

Virgin could be throttling your connection at peak times.

I used to have the same problem when I was using BT.

Or maybe they're having network issues.

We are with Virgin Media and weve had lots of problems over the past few weeks. Connection dropping, when i play my game my ping is usually between 35-55 and a few nights ago it went to 3000 :S
Must admit it seems better now, I havent been online much at the weekend, but today my internet seems fine.

My 20mb was extremely slow friday/saturday but returned to normal yesterday.

Very rarely I have any problems at all, I can remember only twice when we have had problems and I've had it since Telewest.

I'm thinking maybe network issues, Because they do cap my speed after I have downloaded 1-2gig,
I've noticed when download large games off Steam,
Ill download at 1.1mb/s for the first gig or two then my speed gets capped
to around 350kb/s which i think is the max download speed for the Medium or Small broadband package.
But I wasn't downloading at peek times last night, Was past 12am

On 10mb your download will top out at 1mb p/s not 1.5-2.
I get 2 on 20mb and haven't had any problems similar to yours. I'd call them rather than asking on an unrelated forum.
If you call during the day you're more likely to get someone who has English as a first language.

Also download overnight after 9pm, you don't get capped that way.

Yea I think I will have to bite the bullet and just make the dreaded phone call.
The ammount of hassle I've had on the phone with them before with simular problems..

I'm on the XXL Package from Virgin (50Meg) and I know when I took it out they said its guaranteed to be within 10% of the speed you ask for...

If you phone them up and tell them your only getting that then they'll help you sort it or give you free stuff lol

Should be well above 9Meg on a 10meg connection though

I never had a problem with speed on Virgin Media - it always stayed at 95-100% of what I was paying for for 10 years (excepting network maintenance). They didn't set the maximum speeds correctly though so my 10 Mbps package was actually set to 10240000 bps, which is in fact ~9.77 Mbps. Not a big deal but strange.

lol.. I've had this for 20Mb "Fibre optic broadband" for the past month:

Utter joke lol. Takes 5 refreshes for it to start loading a page and then a further 3 minutes for it to partially load something up before it times out again.

Their Customer Support is a joke as well tbh, the *********s should be incarcerated for their disgraceful and compulsive lying. I've phoned them 5 times now and they've blatantly lied on every single occasion just to shut me up.

I know they're just working there, they're just getting paid regardless. But seriously they don't seem to care about customers at all.

Their forums are a complete joke as well. I explained my situation, and the first reply said "your downstream power is too high, I can send a engineer out for you". I fixed the power levels myself, and told him I'd fixed them myself. Since then I haven't received a single reply from them. They're quick to pick out a problem at your end, but when the problem's at their end they don't give a flying ****.

Sorry but I just had to vent somewhere.

Ive been having problems for 3 weeks now. Lag in games, high jitter, erratic pings, etc. And today I had very poor speeds (had 1mb download for a whole tonight - I have a 50mb connection!).

They recently did something. Dont know or care for what it was, some people say it was a modem firmware update for the 50mb modem, some say it was this new traffic shaping policy. VM seem to think its my modem (or something at my end).

Engineer came out last week and he literally didnt know why ping or latency is important in games/communication software. Few more phone calls, they told me it would be fixed at the weekend. Not fixed, so more phone calls, and now an engineer "manager" is coming tomorrow. Dont think he will find anything, the problem is at their end. Its either at the green box or at their exchange.

I just want it fixed tbh. 3 weeks ago it was brilliant for months and I was really happy. Its a big hassle to switch the phone line back to BT and then get ADSL from another ISP like BE, or maybe trying BT infinity (which is new territory and might be as bad as virgin). So I dont really want to leave, but I dont think they are going to leave me much choice. I really think this is how the connection is going to be from now on.

Here's hoping though.

For most people VM are fantastic, get the speeds you pay for 24/7 and low latency.

The telephone hotline is terrible, but if you use the Newsgroups (see, they're not just for Pirates!) you get through to the Techies who actually know what's going on and can give it to you straight (so try not to be a dick in your opening message).

If you're in an oversubscribed area you're usually screwed, It takes them months to upgrade equipment, but at least the newsgroup guys will give you an ETA rather than have you do all the usual script.

Spped wise im good on the 10mb package, but i am getting constant time outs all of a sudden, and its on sites like the bbc and ebay.

Has anybody else has any problems?

I've been with virgin for nearly 3 years now and can safely say I will never use them again once I move out of this house and urge anyone looking for a provider to go elseware.

When the line's working it's great, but they have a far too aggressive throttling policy (1.5gb over several hours is very easy to rack up simply through windows, game updates etc.), going after file sharers is one thing but getting capped repeatedly through normal use of your connection sucks.

Their call centres are also one of the worst ordeals I've ever had to sit through, so when something does go wrong it's so much hassle to get it sorted it's unreal (although as others have said the online forum help is actually pretty good, so props to the guys there).

I'm sure their 50mb connection is great, however that doesn't justify them so heavily gimping their other users.

I'm moving to Be next I think, I know a few people that use them and they're all very happy. I'm envious.

There are a few people on the VM forums having problems with the 50mb package, including me.

I would love to speak to a tech savvy VM engineer or someone that knows what latency is - how do I access these VM newsgroups?
