Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Just an update, just upgraded to tp links Deco M4 mesh wifi system and my god its so much better than VM hub 3! Night and day performance difference!

Using the hub 3 as a modem now instead and the deco m4 as a router, im only using 2 of the 3 nodes as im getting near perfect signal throughout the whole house now, even in the damn garage where the signal would be shot! Managing to even connect the ring doorbell to the network now without the use of a powerline adapter. Highly recommend it to anyone who is having stability or signal issues. My main issue was having around 17 devices connected to the hub 3 wifi network and causing devices to get kicked off the network randomly. Switch off some smart home devices and it stops happening. Was also getting **** poor signal to the ring doorbell outside and in the office as well where i spend a lot of time.

Oakla test on my pc through ethernet connection to the 2nd node:

Down: 220mbs
Up: 20mbs

I'm on the VM 200mb package.

Yup I've had 650MB speed tests on both M500 and M600

Obv if the test was not a one off your Config file is the new 600Mb/s Tier so +10% Contention would give you that speed.

I hit 1.4Gb/s once but I assume it was glitch

.

Well before adjusting settings (after you do initial run you can toggle these) I got nowhere near my speed on any Tier so I also did not rate Fast.com but now its usually just about 1.0-1.2Gb/s each run if my end is 100%.

It cannot be any worse than the built in SamKnows POS when it even runs.

I normally use Speedtest.net Website and Win 10 App.

Does this make sense to anyone here?

Upstream power stats to high at 51? Wondering if this could be the problem with my slow speeds on M600

Yes thats right on the limit. I would get them to come out and sort it (either via the green box you're connected to or by putting an attenuator on your modem).

I spoke to VM again this morning and they are refusing to accept that the upstream power of 51 is an issue. They won't send an engineer for this. They said as I'm getting speeds of 300/350 (even though I'm paying for M600) they don't need to do anything

Might be worth just getting a -3dbi attenuator from ebay or somewhere in that case, can pick them up for a few quid and it'll give you an answer right away if thats the issue.

They guy who did this is going to tweak this for the HUB4 but TBH VM treated him like dirt so he is not that active now.

POWER LEVELS & SNR: A TECHNICAL PRIMER (updated Oc... - Virgin Media Community - 2271297

Make sure you look at correct Tables for your connection (should only be one choice if you are on a HUB 4) and then make a thread on the VM forum and do not bump your post (or it goes back to bottom of list) and in 2-3 days max you will get help from staff taking into consideration the holidays.

I would post it in the Speed section but Network section would be ok.

Do any of you guys have any suggestions on which 3rd party router to buy so I can put my hub into modem mode to see if that improves things? Got a budget of about £100-£150

VM just finished installing in my area using Openreach's ducts, they've spent the last 2 months odd round our housing estate and installed 2 new cabs (a large one and a smaller one), rodding fibre etc all around the area.

I've just booked 500Mb install for this Monday 4th Jan, surprised they have so much availability! It'll be interesting how the install goes, with it being OR ducts and our BT entry point is entirely underground. :D

Finally get away from 60Mb Plusnet FTTC. Although we are literally moving house in a few months with any luck, but VM is on my checklist!

A what from ebay?
Forward path attenuator. It will reduce the power level depending on which one you get. Google 'virgin media attenuator'. The VM engineers will sometimes use them to tweak the power levels, it just screws onto the end of the coax before it connects to the modem/hub (or TV box is that is having the issue).

Ohhh, a 3dB attenuator. I thought you were talking about antennas for a moment.

Here is my BQM

Speeds still slow on M600 between 4PM-Midnight (get about 200-300MB) but after midnight it's back up to a full 600MB+

Can anyone take a look at this and see what it suggests

Well, it shouldn't be dropping out twice a day like that (red parts). Your latency is spiking quite a lot but that will happen if you're heavily downloads/uploading, streaming, etc.

Here is mine (100MB service):

The first drop out was because of a power cut, so that's okay. Not sure about the 2nd drop out though

I did do some steam downloading yesterday so that could be showing in the BQM. VM have agreed to send an engineer out, I'm wondering if it's worth getting an AC86U

Even slower tonight, getting about 70MB connection speed. I ordered an AC86U, I know it won't fix much but anything has to be better than the superhub 3

Why would you get a new router? You will still have to use the Virgin hub as your modem so it won't fix any of your issues and if you want better wireless LAN you'll probably be better off with an access point.
