Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Bit of info here guys please. Have just had my speed trebled from 20MB to 60MB and thus needed to have my old modem replaced with the so called SuperHub and to be fair its less than super! For some reason im rarely able to login into the modem settings (192.168.0.1) without being greeted with a timeout message and have to most of the time turn the SuperHub off and unplug it for a minutes and restart the PC in the process, is this a common problem and if so is there any fix?

Have also noticed that my iPad and iPhone reports the wireless signal isnt at full strength all the time (all full apart from on bar on the iPad wireless icon) even when in the same room as the SuperHub, i don't recall ever the wireless signal being less than full strength on my iPhone and iPad when i was using my old Linksys wireless router. Would there be any reason why i shouldn't be getting max bars on my iPhone & iPad 100% of the time with the Superhub.

To say im less than impressed with this SuperHub is an understatement, and apparently the chipset in these is NetGear which i thought was a reputable company. Any chance of a custom FW coming out for the SuperHub i had the Tomato FW on my LinkSys and that was excellent??

impossible flash a custom FW . only VM can flash FW's to it...

anyway from tomorrow VM are sending R36 FW to 8000 superhub users. R36 as some nice improvements

How do i update then, will that be over the internet?

What are the improvements?
VM sends it automaticly to the superhub...

some of the improvements are wireless speed/signal, UI looks better, the ping/latency are much better (see below) , much more stable, fixs the reset/reboot bug (well fixed for some users)..

Has anyone else s internet seemed slow today?
nope

Due to the abysmal downtime 3 weeks ago I got a free upgrade to 30MB. This involved a change of IP address from 82.xxx.xxx.xxx to 92.xxx.xxx.xxx and the service now is night and day from what I used to get:

The big latency and packet loss has gone completely

Their customer service is abysmal, but can't complain at the net speed right now.

Got VM installed today. 60MB

Went on CS:S earlier.

Ping stays at 20, then literally every 3-5 seconds. up to 200+ down to 20. 3 seconds up to 200 down to 20.

That's on the wireless.

My Xbox is connected via a homeplug. Playing CoD, there's constant ping spikes too. And it's enraging.

Am I stuck with this? :(

Started one of those ThinkBroadband monitors too.

The VM engineer advised me not to use homeplugs as it causes interference down the cable (unsure how true this is)

Hi, i'm looking at reshaping my VM package, currently i am on the old style package (XXL BB (50mb) XL tv and XL phone, i pay £75.21 / month.

I am interested in the new premiere collection wit 'upto' 60mb broadband, M phone and XLtv - with Sky movies and sky sports added, which would cost me £88.40 / month. However, i'm a bit concerned about the traffic shaping between 10am/3pm then 4pm/9pm. What kind of speed should i expect during these periods? I'm not a big downloader but i do stream quite often.

Thanks

The speed restrictions are in the Terms of Service and are a % of your full speed.

If you're changing, phone them up and say you're thinking of moving to a cheaper supplier - you should eventually get through to retention and be able to negotiate a free upgrade if you've been with them a while.

I cancelled all my virgin stuff today, with being single now, i dont need a tv for the missues to watch, so freeview is ok for me, and watch things online anyways.

Virgin speeds are now non existent for the past couple of days with me. I'm afraid this is their second strike. Happens again and i'll shift to Sky since they now offer Fibre. Television and calls do not bother me one bit. I only care for internet.

Any ideas if future updates for the SuperHub will include Dual Wireless Band usage for using 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ bands simultaneously?

Ordered Virgin's 100mb broadband package today, was scheduled to be installed on 12th July then the woman on the phone paused and said "You're living along the Olympic route aren't you". I said "yes the torch will come past outside my window". Then she replied with "Ok your installation won't be until the 25th of September I'm afraid".

Gutted!!
