Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'm actually thinking of jacking in Astraweb. Maybe imagining it but the amount of missing articles especially on larger downloads seems to be increasing by the week. I think I've also only seen my connection at sustained max once, although that could be more to do with only being able to use my computer during peak times and Virgin still having traffic shaping policies on Usenet ports.

Proving quite difficult finding a good set up to partner this connection.

Astra as primary and cheap non expiring block from BlockNews as backup server to get missing blocks. :)

Spoke to some folks, turns out it is most likely down to low power levels. Utilization isn't the issue luckily.

Rang tech support, nice Scottish fella took one look and just went "power levels".

So that's that. Engineer coming on Tuesday.

Why the installers don't check this stuff is beyond me. PC was setup and everything.

Post both your DL and UL power here please.

That user is well clued up and reason his threads on this past and present are stickied.

I would post in the VM forum for his attention and tell him what techs told you.

EDIT : I forgot those are typical levels, look further down for further more specified levels.

You will need to look at all your levels and noise and check against each section of that entire thread like I had to a few weeks ago (I was in spec).

Going by the above table you are a touch high.

Engineer is coming out tomorrow morning, I didn't even ask for a visit. He took one look and said "Yup, gonna have to send someone out".

Suppose they are actually working with the -5 to +10 as a baseline for everyone, which is promising. Was a time when "You got internet" and that was it.

Does anyone know if an engineer simply splitting off the coaxial cable on the side of the flat would effect my internet speed if, for example, the other 2 flats it's routed too are heavy users? It seemed like a bit of a bodge at the time but my line tested perfect, I get full speed a fair amount of the time. And yet right now for example I'm back to bumbling along at 58mb.

Engineer just came out. 8am on the dot. Contractor had done a bodge job on the wiring at the cab. All sorted now. Power levels are perfect. basically between 0.00 and -1.00 and the connection is pure as it gets. Didn't realise the cab was so close.

Thing is right now my connection is perfect,

But I'm never using it at this time! It's peak time when it all goes to pot. Looks like I'll be getting in touch with them. I'm still in the grace period for cancellation but given the next best would be 76mb from BT/Sky whoever, even when it's slow it's often still quicker than that.

I will do the tests again later today, around 7pm.

A good and bad experiences with VM over the last 24 hours.

Bad..

I normally add Sky sports at the start of the footy season and remove when it's all done. There's no contract apart from the first month so this suits me as I can change when I like. This year I get an offer for a "Season Pass" for £150 up front saving 40%. While I was on the phone, the chap upgraded my broadband to 150meg. Happy days.. What he didn't tell me and I only realised when it was too late, they tie you into a bundle contract for 12 months.. Cheeky sods.

However, it turns out the contract is to stay with VM, not the bundle so not that bad after all.

Good...

Broadband has been going up and down the last few days. After a difficult conversation with client support and not understanding his English, an engineer came out the next day. Can't grumble with that.

:)

I'm currently in a rented house that has the last version of the VM router (Before there 2.4 and 5Ghz Router) How easy is it to upgrade the router and what costs are involved?

Hi all having serious issues with my super hub 2 (ui says its a 2) at the moment, can't login to the admin ages at all, I see a password field but no username field. Resetting doesn't help. It seems to be somehow reliant on the internet connection ???? WTF? as it only goes wrong when I am getting extremely poor speeds like sub 1mb paying for 50.

I have an engineer coming out Thursday, should I insist on a new router, or do I just stick this one in modem mode and buy a decent router. Its been a while since I used my old WRT54G.
