Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Peak times are consistently being quite bad now :(

Sent an email to the CEO's office so I'm now getting my bill for half price until it's fixed next month (if it get's fixed that is). Poor show from VM as far as their broadband goes anyway.

Mine was great when it was installed last week, but today it has been dreadful...

Getting pings around 200ms no matter what I play, and speedtest coming in around 40meg. Not a happy bunny at the mo :(

ya wanna get a tech round to check all ya tap connection to the hub and the one from outside, mine didnt look as bad as that but a lot more yellow, the hub conneection was fine but the outside one was not cut long enough so the coax wasnt getting a good connection inside. since the bloke come my and done some bits and bobs its been great, hopefully ya get a good tech who checks all that, the first one i got it just showed me a machine with all the power levels and says look it says ok, there fine and blamed the network, the second guy checked the taps in house and power levels look like this now:

Frequency (Hz) 315000000 Hz 291000000 Hz 299000000 Hz 307000000 Hz N/A N/A N/A N/A

It seems to be back to normal for now. Good pings again and full speed ahead on the speedtest.

I'm having fun and games with their customer services though, as they are trying to charge me £49.95 for installation but the deal I signed up to included free installation (and I have their confirmation email showing this).

I emailed them about the charge and they say they can find no record of me getting free installation and the charge would stand. So I emailed them back a copy of the confimration email that they sent me. They replied to say they couldn't discuss this as I hadn't filled in my customer password on the original contact email (yet they were happy to reply to tell me I would be paying the charge).

So through the hoops I jump filling in the customer contact form (with password) and explaining everything again. Sigh. I am not filled with confidence that they will resolve this anytime soon, but we shall see.

on the topic of homeplugs here's my story...

i bought a set of Netgear homeplugs for when i was in university, out landlady was dead opposed to having cables running through the house.... pff! I bought the 75/85Mbps set i believe at around £75 at the time. to be fair.... they were pretty awesome!pretty much got the full bandwidth through when comparing the net through the plugs and a straight cat5. the ping may have been 2ms or so higher when using them but that's neither here nor there really.

don't remember if anyone remembers playing bf2 over wireless? would "loose connection" for a second every 15 seconds... so annoying! but this eliminated that... be it an expensive fix :p hehe

the only time these things struggled was when i was was trying to stream high bitrate 1080p from my pc to my ps3. pretty much maxed out the capability of them and even had to buffer now and then xD but these were fine for HD streaming so long as it wasn't silly bitrates.

the only other problem i had was when one of them popped :( when i moved into my new flat i wanted to set up a media pc in the bedroom to watch films in bed. plugged it straight into the wall... hit the power.... *POP*... :( /sigh oh well... i got a good 3-4 years use out of them :)

so overall they were pretty solid, a good but slightly pricey alternative to direct cabling if wi-fi has got ya feeling the blues....or lag :p

on a separate note... still waiting for the double virgin speeds to take effect...been delayed and now dec-april.... LAME!!!!! how many people have been successful in phoning up, causing a little bit of a fuss and getting them to upgrade you there and then instead of waiting in the dark??? i'm currently paying £33 a month (ish) and all i'm getting is 20mb, bog standard tv (doesn't even have some freeview channels like film4+1) and phone with i think just weekend landline calls included.... which i don;t use as the only people to phone me were cold callers so i unplugged it xD could i swindle a better deal to get up to £50 mb so then i'll go up to 100mb in the next 6 months or so... or just flat out try and get them to give me 100mb xD

My VM speed's been dire in the evenings for the last two days.

Last night my upload was actually faster than download. 1/2 mb up, 1mb down :(

Back to normal again at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to crap this evening again.

Not sure why it's suddenly doing it. It's been fine for the 5 years or so I've been with VM.

Well, hats off to Virgin customer service. After my initial doubt that they would resolve my query of why I was being charged an installation fee when my contract said it was free, they have already replied, apologised and removed the charge.

Credit where credit's due. Well done Virgin on the swift response and resolution.

Got a superhub and a up to 100Mb package.
Even just through Ethernet I can only get 85Mb.

corrected. :p you pay for up to that speed. could be still setting up a profile if you only had it recently maybe? still.... 85 is nothing to be sniffed at :p

yea they can be alright for some things :p they charged me £20 or something the other month for a "late payment", i explained to them that i had just opened a new bank account and all the direct debits were being switched over. so even when they did try to take the bill out it should have been paid as there was money in both accounts and they agreed and said they would just take the charge off my next bill :)

I've had this before. Internet and TV go out together, and one time the phone as well. Happens about once a year and for a few hours, but at all other times the service is brilliant.

Yeah it's usually a bank holiday when all the people are downloading and my service keeps dropping but now it's midweek too. Still got nothing, not even a signal to be locked onto so thinking something has broken outside in the box or the neighbours have been fiddling with the cables. Bet someone else has moved out and they've cut us off. Tonight is going to be weird, actually had to leave the house for takeaway last night and had to read a book!!!!!! OMG!!!!

my IP address seems to have changed, speedtest.net is showing slow speeds and somewhere over 100 miles away.

Restarted the superhub but no change, is this normal?

Tomorrow morning I've got an engineer coming over to upgrade me from 10mb to 60mb. I got totally sick to death of being throttled to 2.5 mb and rendering my Internet useless.

I hope to god its straight forward- anything I should pick the engineer up on whilst he is there? I only want them coming once!

I've been out of the loop for a few months now. Any news for us Virgin users?

1) My bandwidth was meant to be doubled in June/July this year, Double Speed website now claims Dec 2011/Jan 2012 for my area, which is disappointing to say the least. I could cancel my contract next month and get 100 Mb/s according to their website (I'm on the XL 30 Mb/s now).

2) The traffic is still heavily managed in the peak hours.

3) The daily limits seem to be even lower than before (even though they were meant to be doubled), but the new traffic management policy limits the speed to 50%, instead of 25%.

4) Neither R35 nor R36 firmware resolved wireless issues with my Superhub.

5) There doesn't seem to be a better alternative in my area. :(

Thoughts?
