whats with the low download speed ?

You know the fix date will keep on moving, right?

Yeah probably . Hopefully being in London it'll be a priority to get fixed because of the amount of people that are effected... wishful thinking though!

Unfortunately Infinity isn't available here yet so options are limited otherwise we probably would've made the jump already to Sky. :(

I thought so too with Watford. I left VM almost a year ago, even though I was promised a fix date so at the time I guess you could say I was gambling moving away. A mate a few roads down still has the same issues. Speaks for itself IMO.

Has anyone ever had a second line added?

We going to be asking for a second line added soon for family use, while the main account is going to be for my use only.

Checking the site, it seems £15 per month for the 30mb. Since we already customers, I was hoping they can give us a discount and knock that down to £10 per month.

Our current account is 60mb.

anyone have issues with Sky News live video not buffering/start to play ?

every morning - seems ok

but quite often in evening - doesn't work at all - won't even start buffering- just sits at 0% - no idea if at Sky end or a VM issue

used to work fine all the time though

It's down to utilization. Everyone whos with virgin will suffer the effects of it at some time or another. set up a Broadband Quality Monitor at thinkbroadband.com and watch it over the course of a day. If you notice the yellow graph increasing dramatically during peak hours (between 4pm and 12am) then you are affected by high utilization. Take a look at some of the graphs posted in this thread for more examples.

As for youtube buffering etc, thats also down to virgin. Youtube videos are not streamed directly from youtube. They are all routed through Virgins cache servers first, which are also horribly overloaded, which is why you experience constant buffering with youtube, despite your internet seemingly running normal. People have tried all sorts to try and bypass virgins horrible routing, like changing DNS etc, but nothing seems to work. Virgin need to scrap them.

Heres my graph for the past 24 hours. As you can see, I suffer from high utilization nearly all day:

Hi guys I'm on virgin 120mb with the superhub. My superhub doesn't have quite enough range to get all the way to the end of my 30 meter long flat through 2 partition walls so I get a kinda weak signal down the end in bed. Also my wii U has to be specifically set up to work well with it. I want to use this superhub in modem mode and with absolutely no limit to my budget I want a cable router that has amazing range and the best compatibility with things like wii U. The Asus range looks good - which one do I need?

you might want to hold off buying a replacement just now Ben. The new Superhub 2 starts trials in 2 weeks, they get sent out to trialists next day delivery around the 20th. They accepted LOADS into the trial so info about whether it's any good or not should get out pretty quick.

So far the email just has a few bullet points

Dual-band dual concurrent WiFi
Improved wireless range and stability
Re-oriented unit with innovative antenna array
Additional antenna

So guys currently with Sky got 10mb download speed, however the max they can upgrade my line is 20meg, i can't see the justification paying extra for potentially 10meg quicker plus the £50 activation fee.

having read this thread the main issue is utilisation between peek hours, does this differ on how far from the cabinet and locations ect??? i'm looking at the 60 meg speed first of all.

1. is the speed actually any good?
2. How does it cope with movie streaming? not always youtube but other movie sites?
3. Latency on gaming between 8pm - 11pm? my current ping is 154 which tbh is rubbish.

It depends where you live Dave, most of the problems come from congestion and tend to be in cities. I live in a town with population of 18,000 and get the max 100mb 24/7 but others in cities can often have too many customers in the area and only get 5mb out of their 100 during peak for example.

Best bet would be to search the 60mb & 120mb sections of the virgin forum with the first part of your post-code to see if there are any problems in your area and how bad they are http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Up-to-60Mb-Speed/bd-p/60mbspeed

Hey dude

Thank you for your response, my area is SP10 1QE

There was only 3 post that relate to traffice shaping more than anything, most evenings except weekends i don't game untill around 8ish so just STM should start reducing. i'm slightly concerned re - packet loss how does that effect the gaming community? nothing worse than lagging out dieing or getting kicked for high ping

raw download speeds for files etc is good.
Video streaming is poor during peak hours. At least from youtube and twitch.tv. Not sure about other sites.
Latency in games is up and down during peak hours for me. Sometimes its 40ms, 5 seconds later, its 250. Again this is a utilization issue.
Distance from the cabinet isn't usually a factor. The issue is with the amount of people that are crammed into one cabinet.

I would try and find out how popular virgin is in your area. Go with an ISP that isnt over subscribed.

Thanks

The issue i have is my current line is rubbish and can only take a maximum of 20meg, i have tried plusnet which is the cheapest by BT standards and again my line on fibre is 20meg. seeing all the post re - over utilization is worrying i guess that over population of people buying into their service and their servers can't cope.

Emails went out for the trial everyone was signing up for

4th February – 20th February
Tests performed with your current equipment (Super Hub/modem).

20th February - 25th April
Tests performed with the next generation Super Hub.

Is that for higher speeds than 120mb?
