Virgin Media Discussion Thread

is it possible to use 2 Ethernet cables....

2 pc's connected to the hub via ethernet. would there be a down speed compared to 1 cable and 1 WiFi card.

Thank you BTW for your replies.

Sorry now, for the newb ish question and weather or not I'm in the right section/thread but being a VM discussion I think im ok.

I came to the forums cos tbh I can't be bothered to put up with a VM sales rep trying to sell me something that I don't want yet.....

I'll be getting VM's 60mb Broadband only package (or whatever will be around the £30 a month at the time) in FEB next yet when both of my 3 broadband contracts expires....

When these guys come and set up the BB will I be left with a working router ready to go?
Or will I need to get a router myself?

I know I will need either an Ethernet cable or WiFi card but I'm clueless on what else is needed.

thanks.

If your a new customer, you will get the new super-hub for free, and setup in your house working by an engineer.

I still have the VM300 modem paired to an Asus RT-N66U on 120Mb, will the SH2 bring any improvements?

I'm at 186 days uptime on the Asus.

i was using the sh1 with a great piece of kit, amped wireless R20000G Wireless router. Now i have the sh2 i have tested both in modem mode with the router amped wireless and in router mode on its own. The wireless testing with the router / sh2 on its own was/is matching and sometimes bettering the amped wireless router ! Peed me off a little because i spent a fair few squids on the amped wireless router.
So i now just use the SH2 on its own.
However QoS is not available on the SH2, But its being requested by the beta testers.

I got searching last night (searching on the phone is a pain) and I think id end up with the SuperHub v2 being a new customer.

www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2013/05/virgin-media-uk-claims-its-new-superhub-v2-broadband-router-is-the-fastest.html

which is a nice bonus...... the 150ms ping and 8-9mb download I get from my current provider is good enough, don't get me wrong but one YT video i saw on this superhub v2 resulted in 100mb+ down, 10mb up, 4ms ping and 0 jitter.

It's a given atm that VM have me coming to them especially as they are the only ones to offer broadband only without phone.

Yes that can be a big advantage. I'd do the same, except my home alarm system needs the phone line. Annoying to pay every month just for that, but necessary. I don't use it for anything else.

I've got the SH1 and the wireless sucks, I gave up on it almost immediately and got an Asus RT-N65U, put the sh1 in modem only mode, and it's a perfect setup ever since. SH2 looks good, I don't think I'll bother unless my router craps out on me.

Our internet died 2 days ago and I don't know what the problem is, my mum rang them up and asked for help they just told us to do the usual of turning it off and on, disconnecting and reconnecting all the cables. The dude on the phone was saying our SuperHub was appearing offline when it was on. All the lights on the superhub appear as green. Top one is blinking green rapidly too apparently it should be blue.

Anyone here help me with it? I can still access the router etc. Having to tether off my phone and they are sending someone round on Tuesday but I'm reaching my data cap on my phone so gonna run out of bandwidth soon :/ anyone offer any advice?

Btw we have virgin TV and the service is unaffected.

Just FYI I rang up this morning to see if I could get hold of one of the SH2's without the installation, which I was able to get but with a £20 charge still for the SH2.

Still better than £49

Just blagged one for free!

It probably helped that the retentions dude could see records of me ringing up previously and complaining about the wireless but YAY. Saves me forking out on the Asus I was going to order next week!

The trial for changing the upload traffic management on 100/120mb has started. The only thing that's known so far is that the new restriction is 50% taking you from ~12mb up to 6 ish on 120mb. Virgin are refusing even to tell the people on the trial (no choice in the matter, we were just put on it without asking) any of the numbers involved at all. So for all it's an improvement we now have no clue what any of the triggers are to be managed, how long it lasts etc.
