Hey all, I have an old Webstar Modem from Virgin way back when they was Blueyonder, and when I got upgraded to 20mb it recommended that I upgrade the Modem by phoning up/filling in a web form for a new one, I just wondered, since it's free if I install it myself, how easy is it to install a new modem? is it a case of plugging it in, running the CD and away it goes? or whats the process in that? as i'm sure i'm capable of doing it myself but i'm just curious thats all :D, oh and do the Modems offer any kind of a performance increase? has anyone noticed them perform better or anything like that? Many Thanks to whoever can help :D

This is the sequence to follow for diy:

old modem, unplug, unscrew
new modem, plug in, screw cable in,
computer/router - reboot
plug ethernet into new cable modem
phone VM broadband help to register modem mac
enjoy boost of performance

I had an old ambit 100 - maxed out at about 11Mb
Got the ambit 255? - now maxes out at about 22Mb

I had a new modem recently, engineer came in and stayed for 2 mins. Then he left, told me to leave it an hour, it worked 10 mins later.

Alright Many Thanks guys :D, but then is there a webform where I can request a new Modem on the Virgin Media Website? or do I have to do it over the phone? Many Thanks to whoever can help me again, this is my last question for now, honest! haha :D

I have one of the old Terayon TeraJet modems, when I got the email about the free upgrade to 10mb there was a link to check if my modem was up to scratch. So I checked it out and it said I would have problems with the TeraJet and asked me to fill in a web form to request a new modem. I did so and it gave me a ref number saying I would recieve the new modem shortly. About a week later I get an email from VM saying something along the lines of "Good news!! Your modem does not need to be upgraded!! You will be able to enjoy 10mb automatically!!!". 2 days later I recieve a brand new Foxconn E08C013 modem with self install instructions.

I thought VM had stopped mailing modems out as they were sick of people cloning the macs and getting free broadband. They just came and did mine

Hmmmm well i'll phone them up about it anyway, I have a Webstar DPX100 V2.1 but since i've heard about the 50mb coming out, which i'll probably get, I guess they'll have specific modems for that, so i'll just wait, but then, another question, what Router would you recommend? I heard the Linksys WRT54GL is the best one to buy? as it'l be put under heavy use from two PC's, and 3 gaming consoles, so I dont want it to conk out on me or anything, but is it upto the strain? and what kinda speeds can it deliver for the wired as it's max? as i'd want it to last me for a long long while, Many Thanks to whoever can help :D
