Virgin Media - New STM hours being trialled

;)

Nice. BePro?

Think that beats my record. The most I ever hit was around 500GB, and that was in a house of 5 (and on UKOnline before they went downhill).

I try to ensure my downloads are set to run overnight, but as been said moving from an isp like plusnet with tight caps to BE* has been nice if i do want to download a big file at 7pm at night im not in fear of having my connection slow down or think oh is that going to push me into the next level of capping and slow me down for the rest of the month.

How is Be Pro? im looking to move on now, im getting tired of Virgin, have done since the name changed above the door. Been a customer for many years since dial up and ive had enough. It has an impact on usenet for me now too, paying for Giganews and I can't use it when I want to.

As per all ADSL services, it's highly dependent on the quality of your ADSL line.

I trialled Pro when I was on a ~15mbit line and my upload speed didn't go past 1.6mbit. Others on a similar line have managed over 2mbit upload...luck of the draw :/

My advice for anyone considering Pro would be to get BeUnlimited (still 1.3mbit upload and up to 24mbit download) and see how your line pans out. If you find you're connected at near full speed then it's most probably worth trying out Pro. If not, stick with the far cheaper BeUnlimited option.

Aside from the increased upload (and about £12/month...or £6..I forget with the new price cuts), there's not a huge deal of difference between Unlimited and Pro..

I'm very happy with there service and the customer service as it comes to that there are no slow downs for me at any time, but as more people move over to them will there service stay the same only time will tell.....

That's a question that has been floating around for a long time on Be. They do upgrade their network constantly and so far have kept on top of things (the few times there has been congestion, they've relatively quickly upgraded the backhaul to sort it out). Part of this is because they have far more flexibility than an IPStream ISP and don't need to place orders years (slight exaggeration) in advance for BT Centrals...getting their backhaul upgraded is relatively swifter.

That is good to hear, Virgin's idea of sorting out congestion is to STM, Wait till they roll out 50mbit, the STM will probably be even more ludicrious, with a really low upstream no doubt.

50mb people will be on new hardware, seperate from the other tiers, so when its rolled out it wont cause more problems. if anything it will mean less congestion as the high speed users will be on a different set of hardware, meaning less load for the old current hardware.

Despite this in theory being the case, the current extended STM trials and such don't really bode too well :/

For the time being (on the assumption that you have a good quality phone line), Be are definitely a better choice for a heavy user. If your phone line is poor, VM is a better choice as long as you don't require static IP or the higher upload of Be/etc (the upload part of ADSL uses the lower end of the spectrum so you'll often get full or near to full speed upload even on relatively poor BT lines).

Ive heard this a few times, it will sort out network congestion because it's DOCSIS 3 on seperate hardware etc etc. Even if this was the case with Virgin's current attitude you know it will get oversubscribed and this 5% will be blamed and they will hide behind the T&C once again, they just want to make money charging a premium, whilst delivering the least amount of service they possibly can for that price, what makes you think this will change with 50mbit?.

it wont and that will be the problem, how about the slap the price up high to about 80-90 and give us decent 50mb and if they must like a 15gig cap between 5-9pm even on docsis 3 that would be acceptable to many make them lots of money and they know we will pay it. !to much comon sense for them though.

Because 50Meg with or without a CAP at £80 is still too high, we have slower speeds and higher prices than many countries you would class as "The 3rd World".

11am - 9pm seems like it would ruin them.

The only way this would actually change is if people just quit them.. which I can't see happening. You know what average joe is like.

what other countries charge is irrelevent, since we dont have have the same infastructure as other countries. In the UK, £80 would be reasonable for 50mb as its one of the highest speed connections, and most people would have no other choice but to pay what VM ask if they want that sort of speed.

Other places that already have high speed lines have more competition between ISPs, and so the competition drives the prices down. If BT offered 50mb, then that would force them and VM to keep lowering their prices.

Is that right ?, its peeps like you that get us stuck without moving forward in the stoneage with Speed and Price.

Thats because your happy to get ripped off and dont complain, the fact we aint a 3rd World Country and invented the Phone/TV makes it even more a joke.

Then this added STM/Phorn, Anti-Net Neutrality and 3 Strikes and Your Out (some facts, some Rumours), maes the service I singed up for 8 years ago crap.

I was far better off on 10Meg/384KB with no real Limits other than the FUP that every ISP has.

Free 20Meg upgrade, STB is oversubbed, service is crap since.

On lifetime retnetion to stay after promise of fixes, but I dont see it from VM (NTL), a far cry from the TW-BY era.

I dont see it as getting ripped off, i get what i pay for and i pay what i think is a fair ammount for the service im getting.

And i do get what i pay for, im on 20Mb and maybe im just in a lucky area thats not oversubscribed, but i get exactly what i want. I also dont realy care about the STM, as i do all my heavy downloading outside of STM times, and my average internet usage during the STM times is not enough to trigger it to kick in.

As for the 3 strikes thing, as long as its done right (as in requires proof, and not just some company saying user x connected to tracker y and downloader/uploaded z) is fair, and in some places/some isps, you wont even get 3 strikes, you will simply get 1 warning and then booted off the service if continued.

Yep the UK sucks big time for internet speed, take Sweden for example they are leaps and bound in front of us, the same for most eastern EU countries :(

TRY IT: start a Download/Upload bedfore 4pm, get many GB's of Data then as clock chimes 4pm you will be STM'd.

Sucks I know and I cant think Im too drunk, Over & Out Zzzzzzzz.
