Just about to move into a new house and looking to get virgin media.

But noticed that they charge £50 (normally £100) for the V+ HD (recording) set top box with an additional £5 a month charge over the normal V HD boxes.

Can I opt for the cheaper V HD box and just buy a V+ HD box off ebay to replace it and avoid the monthly charges?

Don't waste your money, any Virgin box you buy from the bay of thieves is technically stolen property. Virgin retain ownership of all box's, the fee they charge is for install/activation, not the equipment itself, the big advantage of this is they give you free repairs for as long as you're a customer. For the box to be activated it'd need to be added to your account along with he card and then have the appropriate service codes added, they won't do this for any member of the public.
