Virgin Media & YouTube - Throttling.

Yup I've been on at them a few times about it, it's my only issue with them. Is got better over the last few months but every now and again still goes flakey. There are ways around it though as mentioned above!

Nope, only with VM. YouTube's servers have to handle a lot of data as it is a worldwide website being accessed by different portals (versions of languages & much more). YouTube is also branded by Google and closely integrates itself with other Google services. I may try running a ping test with a certain amount of data to YouTube.com and see what happens.

People are buffering videos on multiple devices over one connection as well which results in more of Google's usage and servers being used to provide significant access to loading videos. Especially at intense speeds such as 30Mb/s (which is good for a video buffer).

Use Google DNS not VM, then you won't get sent to their unreliable cache instead.

it is quite common issue and look on the forums to see the youtube issues.

Ayee, cheers guys. :) I'll try the Google DNS.

Many thanks/credit towards Chris1712. :p :)

It's bad when YT isn't able to load a 2 minute video because of my ISP/VM.

For the last week or so I can barely watch a video without it stopping dead at some point, regardless of the time. Sometimes they don't even start. Switching to 240p/etc does nothing.

I had a feeling it was Flash 11.7.700.202, but it's probably Virgin Media.

You can see it by downloading the video to your hd with DownloadHelper, no Flash player involved. The download will go at 1mbps+ then slow to 0 within a minute. Pausing and resuming the download seems to get it working again.

Mine was the same for the most part of last year, they couldn't explain it but there was an over utilisation problem in my area.

Since April its back to how it should be since the area was "fixed" , i guess they don't admit it but it seems likely they do something along the lines of throttling.

Something strange is going on with virgin and youtube, could download stupidly faster, but youtube always more pixelated than a pixelated SAS face.
American VPN didnt help.
Just switched to sky fibre, I'm hoping although its only 1/4 of the speed it'll work better, time will tell.

Either way, sky go and a shed load more hd channels and paying far less a month.

Anyone noticed the sudden switch from 360p to 240p and then back up to 360p?

YouTube automatically changes to different resolutions when the download is too low to handle the current resolution.

It is frustrating, really frustrating and very annoying as well as mildly confusing.

VM seriously need to stop doing this. I love VM, but their management and policies are all over the place.

I'm on VM's 30MB service. Recently, videos simply will not load at all. It never used to do this.

Following the above posts. I have to say, it is obviously VM.

I also have a problem where the whole page is not loading correctly on YouTube.

The related videos at the side have text and no thumbnail. They're just blank and the video doesn't load.

-.-

Must say I've been having issues for the past couple of days now with youtube, usually have no problem at all and it's been the same for my friends on VM and family members.

Sometimes videos load, but then stop and won't continue to load. But yeah, pretty bad right now - certainly believe it is on their end.

Not only that mate, I use keepvid to download videos I like to keep as I know they will not be up on the youtube for forever.

But now I am being forced to download videos I want to just watch and downloading them will use the full force of my 120mb line such as earlier I was downloading a 500mb 1080p commentary and it was downloading at over 10mb/s whilst I was stuck on buffering on 30 seconds.

I have 3 different browsers which provide the same results and its only been the past 1-2 weeks this has been happening. First it was not being able to change video quality I just get endless spinning from the cogwheel and then I am waiting for about the length of the video just to see 1 minute of it.

Yeah, these are the exact issues I'm having.

Tried that Google DNS thing yesterday and it hasn't hung a video since touch wood. Wish I'd known about that earlier cos I actually bought a new N router a while back thinking it was my wireless signal which was at fault. I set the Google DNS in both my router and windows btw
